Hearts Nab Victory, Wooden Shoes Fall

Effingham High School broke its losing streak with a 53-45 non-conference boys basketball victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening.

The Hearts edged out to a 17-16 opening quarter lead behind two three-pointers by KJ Kellams and five points from Wade Bushur. Hayden Wendilng added four points.

OPH came back with an 8-7 second period to tie the score at 24-24 at halftime.

But the Hearts got unwound in the third quarter with a 22-14 run to lead 46-38 going into the final quarter. Wendling connected on three baskets and two free throws for eight points while Rylan Pals hit three trifectas for nine and Cannon Bockhorn hit a three-pointer.

Both teams then played to a 7-7 final quarter.

The Hearts were led by Wendling with 17 points on five field goals and seven of nine at the line. Pals chipped in with nine and Kellams added eight.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham pounded Oblong/Hutsonville/Palestine 74-32.

The Hearts were led by Cannon Bochorn with 16, Will Hecht with 12 and Jake NIebrugge with 11.

At Mount Zion

Teutopolis traveled to Mount Zion and fell to the homestanding Braves by a 55-39 score Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to an 8-4 opening quarter lead as Garrett Gaddis and Zac Niebrugge hit a three-pointer each and Alex Kremer put in a basket.

But Mount Zion got on a second quarter roll with a 23-8 tally to lead 27-16 at halftime. Lyncoln Koester went on a 10 point run while JC Anderson scored nine.

The Braves continued on with a 15-5 third period to lead 46-21 going into the final quarter.

T-town finally broke loose with an 18-13 final quarter, hitting five of six at the line.

No Wooden Shoe finished in double figures. Gaddis led the way with nine points on three trifectas. Austin Bloemer led in rebounds with six while Joey Niebrugge had five. Mitch Koester had four assists.
