Effingham Second, St. Anthony Third At James Burke Memorial Tourney; Seventh-Grade Regional Roundup

GREENVILLE -- Effingham finished second and Effingham St. Anthony third at the 75th Annual James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Friday.

Effingham fell to Triad in the championship game of the tournament, 48-43.

Triad edged out to a 14-10 opening quarter lead and led 23-18 at halftime. The Mustangs came back with a 13-11 third quarter to pull within 34-31 but Triad got back on track with a 14-12 final quarter.

The Mustangs had three players in double figures. Ian Kinkelaar led the way with 14 points while Jenner Pals added 11 and Carson Fox 10.

In the third place contest, Effingham St. Anthony easily downed Greenville, 47-21.

The Bullpups held a 15-3 opening quarter lead as Conner Storm scored seven points and Cooper Sehy hit two three-pointers. The lead went to 32-8 at halftime.

The Bulldogs led 37-12 going into the final quarter and had a 10-9 edge.

C. Storm was the lone Bullpups player in double figures with 18 on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of three at the line. The Bulldogs hit seven three-pointers. Sehy finished with three for nine points.

Class 7-2A St. Anthony Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg edged St. Elmo/Brownstown, 29-24 in the Class 7-2A Effingham St. Anthony Regional Saturday.

SEB held an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 16-13 at halftime.

But Stew-Stras came back with a 10-6 third quarter and outscored SEB 6-2 in the final period for the victory.

Noah Vonderheide and Weston Spannagel led the way for the winners with seven points each. Stew-Stras improved to 11-11.

SEB was led by Schaub with 12 points.

Stew-Stras will now meet Effingham St. Anthony at 6 p.m. today for the right to advance to the championship game.

In the second contest, South Central trounced Altamont, 67-14.

The third game went to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Assumption Central A&M, 40-25.

South Central and CHBC will meet at 7:15 p.m. today. The winner advances to the title contest Wednesday at 6 p.m.

At Effingham

Class 7-2A Casey-Westfield Regional

North Clay (Louisville) was a winner Saturday in the Class 7-2A Casey-Westfield Regional.

North Clay, seeded second, defeated Hutsonville 38-13.

In the opener, Casey-Westfield won over Dieterich, 34-23.

Red Hill (Bridgeport) downed Arcola, 40-26.

Games today feature Paris Crestwood against Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. followed by North Clay taking on Red Hill at 7:15.

 

Class 7-3A Teutopolis Regional

Jasper County edged Shelbyville Moulton, 39-35 in the Teutopolis Regional Saturday.

Jasper County took a 7-5 opening quarter lead and led 20-15 at halftime. Jasper County held a 28-19 lead going into the final period when Shelbyville Moulton came back with a 16-11 run only to fall short.

Brenden Emmerich led the winners with 13 points. Jacob Ferguson was the top rebounder and Cambell Ulm the top defender. Jasper County is now 13-9 on the season and returns to action today at 6 p.m. against  Teutopolis.

The second game at 7:15 will feature Lawrenceville Parkview against Robinson Nuttall.

Class 7-4A Taylorville Regional

Effingham saw its season come to a close at the Taylorville Regional Saturday.

The Mustangs fell to Mattoon, 43-23. No other information was provided.

In the opening contest, Charleston trounced Rochester 43-15. The second game went to Taylorville over Stephen Decatur, 35-24.

Today's games feature Mount Zion against Charleston at 5 p.m. followed by Taylorville taking on Mattoon at 6:15.
