EHS Girls Win Vandalia Tourney Title, T-town Consy Champs, C'land Fifth At LPC Tourney

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School won the championship of the Vandalia Girls Tournament with a 40-29 victory over Greenville Saturday.

The Hearts trailed Greenville by a 10-5 opening quarter but came back with a 10-3 second period to lead 15-13 at halftime in the low-scoring contest.

Sidney Donaldson tallied four points in the second period while Bella Austin hit a basket.

The Hearts then had a 10-7 third quarter to lead 25-20. Donaldson put in four more points and Austin hit a basket to reach 1,000 points in her career.

In the fourth quarter, the Hearts broke loose for a 15-9 run as Donaldson and Alyssa Martin scored four points each and Bria Beals put in her second three-pointer of the contest and the Hearts had won the championship.

Donaldson finished with 12 points on six of 11 from the field. Also in double figures was Bria Beals with 10 points on two regular baskets and two three-pointers.

Donaldson was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

At Highland

Teutopolis handed Bethalto Civic Memorial a 59-46 loss to win the consolation championship game at the Highland Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead behind Anna Probst's seven points and a three-pointer by Mollie Ruholl.

The Shoes held a 24-21 halftime lead as A. Probst continued on, scoring eight of her team's 10 points.

In the third quarter, the Shoes took off with an 18-9 run to lead 42-30. Chloe Probst took over scoring. She connected on three baskets and two free throws for eight while M. Ruholl and A. Probst hit a three-pointer each.

The Shoes then put in their free throws in the fimal quarter to nab the 13-point victory.

A. Probst finished with 21 points on seven field goals, four from three-point range, and one of two at the line. C. Probst scored 15 and Kelsey Niemerg 11, seven coming in the final period.

C. Probst led in rebounds with nine while Kelsey NIemerg had eight. Niemerg had three steals and two assists.

At Decatur

Cumberland High School claimed seventh place at the Little Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates edged Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, 58-56.

Cumberland ran off to a 16-6 opening quarter lead as Katelyn Shoemaker connected for eight points in the quarter and Jade Carr knocked down two three-poimters.

The Pirates had a slight 13-12 second period edge to lead 29-18 at halftime. Carr added another three-pointer to her total.

The two teams played to a 15-15 third period and Cumberland was still ahead by 11 points.

That's when the bottom dropped out for the Pirates as ALAH came back with a 19-9 run to knot the score at 53-53, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Paige Dittamore was the lone player to score for the Pirates, hitting five free throws for the victory.

K. Shoemaker led the way with 18 points on six field goals, three from trifecta land and three of four at the line. Carr added 15 points and Alysa Dittamore 11
