Effingham St. Anthony broke a 14-14 opeining quarter tie with a 23-7 second period and went on for a 70-47 National Trail Conference win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a boys basketball game heard on 979XFM.

Brock Fearday tallied five and Max Koenig four in the opening quarter for the Bulldogs. Connor Manhart kept the Hatchets in the game, knocking in four three-pointers in that opening quarter for 12 of his team's 14 points.

St. Anthony then went on a 23-7 second period tear. B. Feraday hit three baskets and two free throws for nine points while Collin Westendorf added seven points and the Bulldogs led 37-21 at halftime.

The Bulldogs then had a 20-16 third quarter to lead by 20 going into the final period.

B. Fearday led the way with 20 points on eight field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line. Max Koenig chipped in with 14 while Ryan Schmidt added 12 and Westendorf 11.

The Bulldogs are 5-0 in the conference, 18-4 overall.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Manhart with 20 points on seven field goals, six of those three-pointers. Jackson Gurgel chipped in with 13.

The Hatchets drop to 2-4 in the conference, 10-12 overall.

In the junior varsity game, St. Anthony was a 50-19 winner. The Bulldogs were led by Will Fearday with 11 and Henry Brent with 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Rylan Rincker with nine.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown tallied a 60-37 victory over Mulberry Grove Friday evening.

SEB edged out to a 13-9 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 30-15 at halftime.

Two players finished in double figures for the winners. Adam Atwood led the way with five of 13 from the field, one of four from three-point range and three of six at the line for 14 while Cade Schaub hit six of 11 from the field and two of three at the line, also for 14.

Atwood led in rebounds with 12 while Josiah Maxey pulled down seven. Atwood had five steals. Schaub, Collin Maxey, J. Maxey and Trenten Monnet had one blocked shot each. J. Maxey had four assists.

At St. Elmo

At Beecher City

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed a double overtime thriller over South Central in National Trail Conference play Friday evening.

CHBC took an 11-5 opening quarter lead as AJ Radloff connected for six points and Carson Evans hit a three-pointer.

But South Central came back with a 12-7 second period to pull within 18-17 at halftime. Max Magnus scored five points on a three-pointer and two free throws. The Cougars hit five of seven free throws in the period.

CHBC moved into a 31-25 lead in the third quarter. Gage Lorton, who had not scored in the first half, went on a tear, hitting three field goals and four free throws for 10 points. Evans added another three-pointer.

But South Central fought back, outscoring CHBC 16-10 in the third quarter to tie the score at 41-41. Calloway Smith hit three baskets for seven points while the Cougars were seven of 10 from the free throw line.

In the overtime session, CHBC came back with a 13-7 run for the 54-48 victory. Clayton Wojcik hit a basket and was five of six at the line. The Bobcats finished with 11 of 16 from the free throw line.

Radloff finished with 16 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer and was three of four at the line. Lorton added 11 and Kaidyn Calame 10.

"We have won our second NTC game this year, making it only the third time we have won more than one conference game," said CHBC Coach Tanner Thompson. "The first time since 2017 we have won more than one. Also the first time since 2017 we have beaten South Central."

The Cougars were led by Magnus with four field goals, three of those trifectas, and seven of eight at the line for 18. Also in double figures was C. Smith with 15.

At Ramsey

North Clay (Louisville) handed Ramsey an 81-68 loss in Friday play.

The Cardinals are now 6-12 on the season.

 

Lincoln Prairie Conference tournament

Cerro Gordo/Bement edged Cumberland at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Friday, 52-50.

The Pirates will be back in action Wednesday at Arthur vs. Decatur Unity at 5 p.m. in the tourney.
