EHS Claims Opener At Vandalia, Newton Wins At LIC, C'land Falls At LPC, Highland Tourney Scores

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School, the top seed at the Vandalia Girls Basketball Tournament, opened with a 66-20 win over No. 8 Salem JV, Monday evening.

The Hearts ripped out to a 28-2 opening quarter lead. Averie Wolf scored seven points in the quarter while Bria Beals chipped in with two three-pointers and Sidney Donaldson added five points.

The Hearts connected on their free throws for a 17-7 second quarter to lead 45-9 at halftime. EHS had a 16-5 third quarter before subbing, using 14 players in the contest.

Four players hit double figures for the Hearts. Wofle led the way with 12 points, all in the first half. She hit five field goals, two of those three-pointers. Alyssa Martin and Donaldson tallied 11 points each while Beals added 10.

Salem won over Mascoutah, 45-31 while Greenville downed Wesclin 59-28 and Centralia trounced Vandalia 50-15.

The Hearts are back in action Wednesday, taking on Salem at 6 p.m. Centralia will meet Greenville at 6:30 p.m.

At Lawrenceville

Newton and Casey-Westfield were winners in the Little Illini Conference Tournament Monday evening.

Newton took an early lead by a 16-4 count on Lawrenceville and held a 29-9 halftime lead.

The Eagles continued on with a 22-11 second half.

Camryn Martin led the way for Newton with 20 points on five field goals, three of those trifectas, and seven of 10 at the line. Karasyn Martin added nine points.

C. Martin led in rebounds with eight while Lilly Kessler added seven. C. Martin and K. Martin had three steals each. Elley Bennett led in assists with four.

Casey-Westfield captured a 39-35 victory over Marshall in the second contest.

Newton improved to 13-10 on the season and will be back in action Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Casey-Westfield for the consolation championship at 7:30 p.m.

Lawrenceville and Marshall dropped into the seventh place game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

At Decatur

Cumberland fell to Tri-County by a 45-41 count at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Monday evening.

Tri-County edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead. Jade Carr tallied five points for Cumberland. 

The Pirates came back with a 13-4 second period to pull ahead 21-16 at halftime. Suzy Fritts and Alysa Dittamore scored four points each and CAarr chipped in with three more.

But Tri-County rallied with an 18-6 third quarter run to pull ahead 34-27.

Cumberland had another good quarter, outscoring Tri-County 14-11 but it was too little.

Two players hit double figures for Cumberland. Carr led the way with 15 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of four at the line. A. Dittamore chipped in with 10.

In other games, Sullivan blasted Tolono Unity 71-10, Cerro Gordo//Bement downed Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 42-23, Argenta-Oreana trounced Heritage 69-36, Arcola beat Okaw Valley 61-21 and there was no score listed for Villa Grove vs. Blue Ridge.

Cumberland will now face Okaw Valley at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Teutopolis did not play Monday evening in the Highland Tournament.

Teutopolis returns to action tonight at 4 p.m. against Belleville East. Other games tonight include Waterloo vs. Collinsville, 5:30 p.m.; Breese Mater Dei vs. Taylorville, 7 p.m. and Breese Central vs. Highland,, 8:30 p.m.
