South Central, St. A, BSE, Dieterich Victorious In NTC Girls Tourney

BEECHER CITY -- The National Trail Conference Girls High School Basketball Tournament got underway Monday with four games.

In the opener, South Central handed North Clay (Louisville) a 61-47 loss.

The Cougars held a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 31-15 at halftime.

North Clay came back in the second half to outscore South Central but couldn't make up that first half run by the Cougars.

Kaitlyn Swift and Taegan Webster provided the one-two scoring punch with 20 points each. Swift connected on four three-pointers and was eight of eight at the line while Webster hit five baskets, two of those from three-point range, and was four of six at the line.

Also in double figures for the Cougars was Lauren Johnson with 15 points.

The Cougars connected on 15 of 20 free throws.

North Clay was led by Miah Ballard with 24 points on nine field goals and six of six at the line.

In the second contest, Effingham St. Anthony pounded Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 62-23.

The Bulldogs took a 30-9 halftime lead and that was the game. Stacie Vonderheide led the way for St. Anthony with 10 field goals and six of seven at the line for 26 points. Also in double figures was Adysen Rios with 11.

Vonderheide had eight rebounds, six assists and six steals. Rios added six assists.

"We got off to a great start," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "Stacie had an excellent game. Freshman Addie Lauritzen came off the bench and had a great defensive game and scored five points, had five rebound and three blocked shots. Ava Faber knocked down a three from 25 feet at the end of the first quarter. It was an awesome shot."

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar and Kaitlyn VonBehrens with seven points each.

In the third contest, Brownstown/St. Elmo edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 49-42.

BSE stepped out to a 12-5 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with a 12-9 second quarter to trail 21-17 at halftime. Both teams scored 12 points in the thid quarter and BSE finished with a 16-13 final period.

Dayana Haslett had an outstanding game, scoring 31 points. She connected on eight field goals, three from three-point land, and was a perfect 12 of 12 at the free throw line. Also in double figures was Lexi Seabaugh with 11.

CHBC was led by Macee Rodman with 16 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of seven at the line.

In the final game of the day, Dieterich claimed a 60-54 victory over Neoga.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 13-10 opening quarter lead and led by only a point at halftime, 22-21.

Dieterich then took off with a 22-12 third quarter run and held off Neoga in the final quarter for the six-point win.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Miley Britton scored 16 on four field goals, two from three-point range, and was six of nine at the line. Addison Miller tallied 13 and Kady Tegeler 12.

Neoga was led by Brynn Richards with 18 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of five at the line. Haylee Campbell chipped in wth 15 and Allison Sampson scored 10.

The tournament continues today as top-seeded Altamont meets South Central at 6 p.m. and Windsor/Stew-Stras faces North Clay at 7:30.
