NTC Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tourney

The Nationnal Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament got underway during the weekend.

During Friday action, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened the tournament with a 48-37 victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

The second contest went to Sigel St. Michael over Windsor, 38-29.

In the third contest, Neoga defeated Altamont, 45-19.

Neoga stepped out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead and led 24-7 at halftime. Neoga then had a 21-12 second half.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Ballinger led the way for Neoga with 15 points while Haarman and Will added 12 each.

Altamont was led by Lyndon Bannister and Xavier Logue with six each.

In Saturday play, Dieterich captured a 47-24 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

In the second contest North Clay (Louisville) downed Effingham Sacred Heart, 41-24. North Clay improved to 9-6.

The third contest went overtime before Stewardson-Strasburg edged Sigel St. Michael, 35-33.

The two teams were tied at 6-6 after the opening quarter before Stew-Stras moved into a 15-11 halftime lead. Both teams tallied eight in the third quarter.

The Sharpshooters came back with a 10-6 final quarter to tie Stew-Stras 29-29. Stew-Stras then pulled out the win in overtime.

Mason MAanhart and Eli Jones led the winners with 11 points each.

St. Michael was led by Fearday with 16 points.

The final game of the day went to Neoga over South Central 24-21.

The tournament continues today with Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Effingham Sacred Heart meeting at 6:15 p.m. and Sigel St. Michael against South Central at 7:30, both in consolation bracket play.

Dieterich faces North Clay at 6:15 p.m. and Stewardson-Strasburg takes on Neoga at 7:30 Tuesday in winner bracket action.

At Casey

Effingham split victories with host Casey-Westield Saturday.

Casey-Westfield won the seventh-grade contest, 39-28. Casey-Westfield held a 17-8 halftime lead and had a 22-20 second half.

Leading Effingham was Cameron Moon with nine points.

In eighth-grade competition, Effingham ran out to a 17-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 54-18 victory.

Jenner Pals led the way with 15 points for the Msutangs while Maxwell Love added 10. Ten players scored for Effingham.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis tallied a close win in the seventh-grade contest but easily handled the eighth-grade matchup against Jasper County Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes edged Jasper County, 34-32. T-town took an 11-7 opening quarter lead and led 21-15 at halftime. Jasper County came back with a 16-13 second half.

Blake Niemerg led the winners with 10 points while Kale Goeckner added eight.

Jasper County was led by Cambell Ulm with 13 and Chase Kistner with eight. Preston Harris was the top rebounder and Kistner the top defender. Jasper County dropped to 11-8.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town stepped out to a 25-15 halftime lead and never looked back.

Payne Davidson led the way with 14 points while Jake Probst added 10.

Jasper County was led by Maddox Horner with seven points.
