T-town Drops Opener At Highland Tourney, C'land Wins At LPC, Newton Loses At LIC

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School fell in its opening round game at the 37th Annual Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Taylorville raced out to a 17-7 opening quarter lead on the Shoes.

But T-town came back with a 24-15 second quarter run to pull ahead 36-32 at halftime. Chloe Probst connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight in the quarter while Malea Helmink hit three baskets for six. Anna Probst and Allie Ruholl finished with five in the quarter each.

But the Tornadoes had a 14-3 third quarter run to lead 46-34 going into the final period then had a slight 10-9 edge.

T-town had two players in double figures. Helmink led with 11 on five field goals, one a three-pointer. Ruholl added 10. C.Probst led in rebounds with seven. Isabelle Zerrusen had two assists. Mollie Ruholl and Kelsey Niemerg had one steal each.

In other games Saturday, Alton pounded Belleville West 91-21;  Okawville won over Bethalto Civic Memorial 57-50, O'Fallon downed Hillsboro 77-58, Nashville beat Triad 58-36, Breese Mater Dei defeated Belleville East 54-41, Breese Central bounced Waterloo 64-23 and Highland defeated Collinsville 56-38.

Teutopolis will now face Belleville East at 4 p.m. Tuesday in consolation bracket action.

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament

Cumberland captured a win at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates pounded Villa Grove by a 69-12 count. Cumberland held a 21-1 opening quarter lead and led 43-4 at halftime.

Alysa Dittamore led the way with 21 points on nine field goals and three free throws. Jade Carr chipped in with 16 points.

The only other score available was Cerro Gordo/Bement 52, Heritage 23. No scores from Argenta-Oreana vs. Tolono Unity or Okaw Valley vs. Blue Ridge.

At Lawrenceville

Newton fell victim to Richland County, 45-42 at the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles stepped out to a 13-9 opening quarter lead and held that margin at halftime, 21-17.

But Richland County came back with a 15-10 third quarter to move ahead 32-31 then had a 13-11 final period.

Camryn Martin led the way for Newton with 14 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Lilly Kessler added 13 points.

C. Martin led in rebounds with eight while Kessler pulled down seven. Elley Bennett had four assists. Bennett, Kessler, C. Martin and Emma Hadler had two steals each.

The Eagles will be back in action at the tournament in the consolation bracket against Lawerncevilleat 6 p.m.

In other games, Mount Carmel beat Lawrenceville, 48-31 and Robinson won over Marshall 58-34. No score reported on the Paris vs. Casey-Westfield contest.
