Tornadoes Beat Hearts, Indians Down Hiltoppers

Effingham High School fell to Taylorville in an Apollo Conference boys basketball game heard on KJ Country 102.3 Thursday evening.

The Tornadoes stepped out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead as Owen Younker scored seven and the Tornadoes hit five of six from the free throw line.

The lead went to 44-21 at halftime. The Hearts' Cannon Bockhorn hit a three-pointer while Hayden Wendling led the way with six points on two baskets and two of two at the line.

Taylorville continued on with a 15-10 third period. Baron Odom scored six and Clark Durbin five.

Effingham had three baskets in the quarter and were four of four at the free throw line. They trailed Taylorville by a 59-31 score going into the final period.

Effingham came back with a 16-8 final quarter behind six of seven at the line. Nolan Fearday connected on four of those while Rylan Pals hit a three-pointer.

Taylorville had all five starters score in double figures. Dillon Clark led with 16 while Durbin added 14, Younger 13 and Jake McConnel and Odom finished with 10 each.

Effingham was led by three players with eight points each, Hayden Wendling, Pals and Cannon Bockhorn. The Hearts shot 30.2 percent from the field but were 69.5 percent at the free throw line with 16 of 23.

Taylorville improved to 1-5 in the Apollo Conference, 2-15 overall.

Effingham dropped to 1-5 in the conference, 2-19 overall. The Hearts are back in action Tuesday playing host to Dieterich Tuesday before heading to the Salem Tournament Wednesday.

At Altamont

Altamont put together a good scoring first half to down Hillsboro in a non-conference matchup, 66-32 Thursday evening.

The Indians edged out to a 17-10 opening quarter lead behind six points by Eli Miller and a three-pointer by Kaden Davis.

Altamont kept the pressure on and pounded out a 23-4 second period to lead 40-14 at halftime. E. Miller continued his hot scoring with two baskets, one a three-pointer, and four of four at the line for nine points while Davis, Alec Jahraus and Dillan Elam connected on a three-pointer each.

The Indians finished out with a 20-16 third period for a 60-30 lead. Kade Milleville, who hadn't scored in the opening half, hit three baskets and two of two at the line for eight points while Kaidyn Miller had six. Davis and Elam hit a three-pointer each.

Two players hit double figures for the Indians. E. Miller finished with 15 on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of four at the line. K. Miller chipped in with 13 on six field goals and one of two at the line.

Altamont improved to 11-4 on the season and will hit the road tonight for a National Trail Conference matchup at North Clay (Louisville).
