EHS Captures 44-38 Victory Over Paris In Girls Basketball

PARIS -- Effingham High School bounced back with a 44-38 victory over Paris in girls basketball competition Wednesday evening.

The Hearts held a 10-5 opening quarter lead behind a three-pointer by Averie Wolfe and baskets from Alyssa Martin, Bria Beals and Saige Althoff.

Wolfe then went on a secnod quarter run, nailing two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 of her team's 14 points. Sidney Donaldson chipped in with the other basket and two free throws.

The Hearts held a 24-14 halftime lead.

The Tigers came back with a 10-5 third quarter run to pull within 29-24 at halftime. But EHS held off Paris with a 15-14 final quarter for the victory.

Wolfe finished with 13 points as the lone player in double figures. She hit five field goals, three of those from three-point land.

Donaldson and Bella Austin contributed seven points each.

The Hearts finished with 10 of 14 from the free throw line for 71 percent.

Paris claimed the junior varsity game, 30-28.

Effingham improved to 17-4 on the season and is back in action at the Vandalia Tournament Monday. EHS, the top seed in the meet, will face No. 8 Salem JV at 10 a.m.

In other first round games, No. 4 Salem takes on No. 5 Mascoutah at 11:30, No. 3  Greenville meets No. 6 Wesclin at 1 p.m. and No. 2 Centralia faces No. 7 Vandalia at 2:30 p.m.

The tournament continues Wednesday and Thursday with two games each night and will finish out Saturday with the seventh place contest at 10 a.m., fifth place game at 11:30, third place contest at 1 and the championship at 2:30.
