Hearts Fall To Tornadoes, Maroons, Hatchets Claim Girls Basketball Wins

Taylorville High School has Effingham's number in girls basketball.

The Tornadoes handed the Hearts another Apollo Conference loss Tuesday evening by a 54-41 count in a game heard on 979 XFM. The Tornadoes beat the Hearts back on November 28 by a 56-46 score.

This time around. Taylorville stepped out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and Effingham spent the rest of the game attempting to catch up.

It was raining three-pointers by the Tornadoes as Addi Tarr knocked in three while teammates Aubrey Kietzman and Kyleigh Heimsness nailed two each and the lead had shot to 21-9 after the first quarter.

Effingham got unwound and came back with an 11-5 second quarter to pull within 26-20 at halftime. Bria Beals nailed a three-pointer while Alyssa Martin, Saige Althoff, Bella Austin and Olivia Moser put in a basket each.

The Hearts played Taylorville even in the third quarter, both scoring 11 points. Althoff and Sidney Donaldson had four points each.

But Taylorville got back on the scoring track with a 17-10 final period. In that quarter, Mazie Fleming scored eight points while Tarr added five.

Beals nailed two more three-pointers and finished with four in the contest. She was the lone EHS player in double figures with 12.

The Hearts could must only 28.3 percent from the field for the game and was 75 percent from the line.

Taylorville was led by three players in double digits. Tarr finished with 20 while Heimsness and Fleming added 12 each. The Tornadoes are 6-0 in the Apollo Conference and 16-3 overall.

The Tornadoes connected on 40.9 percent from the field and were 64.3 percent at the line. They hit 42.9 percent of their three-pointers with nine.

The Hearts had seven players score in the contest but couldn't overcome that first quarter run. Coach Jeff Schafer's squad dropped to 3-3 in the conference and are 16-4 overall.

EHS will be back in action Thursday, traveling to Paris.

At Palestine

Dieterich High School had a big scoring second quarter and went on for a 65-41 victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Movin' Maroons took an 18-12 opening quarter lead then broke the game open with a 21-5 second period surge.

Miley Britton and Addison Miller got the Maroons off in the rgiht direction. Britton scored eight points in the quarter while Miller added six. Both connected on two three-pointers.

Britton then got on a second quarter roll, knocking in her third three-pointer and a free throw along with two regular baskets for eight. Miller hit her third three-pointer.

OPH came back with a 16-11 third quarter run but still trailed Dieterich 50-33 going into the final quarter when the Maroons had a 15-8 tally.

Britton finished with an outstanding 30 point contest. She connected on 12 field goals, that included four three-pointers and was two of four at the line. Also in double figures was Miller with 13.

Dieterich also won the junior varsity contest, 28-10. Leading the Maroons was Callie Faller with 12 points.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg zipped out to a 23-0 opening quarter lead on Martinsville and went on for a 47-12 victory Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets' Ella Kinkelaar went to work in the opening quarter, connecting on two regular field goals and two three-pointers for 10 of her team's 22 points. Kendra Hayes added five.

The lead went to 35-0 at halftime and the Hatchets led 43-12 going into the final quarter.

Kinkelaar finished with 11 points in the contest on four field goals and one of two at the line. K. Hayes added nine.
