Effingham Sacred Heart and St. Elmo/Brownstown split junior high boys basketball victories Tuesday evening.

St. Elmo/Brownstown captured the seventh-grade contest, 41-35. The Shamrocks held a 14-2 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a 16-2 second period run to lead 18-16 at halftime. 

SEB had a 9-8 third period to move into a 27-19 lead. Sacred Heart came back with a 16-14 final period but couldn't get over that second quarter run.

Schaub tallied 18 to lead the winners while Stufflebeam added nine.

The Shamrocks were led by Gabe Traub with 17 and Logan Schoenoff with 13.

In the eighth-grade contest, Sacred Heart was a 54-32 winner. The Shamrocks led 24-20 at halftime then had a 30-12 second half run.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Freddie Jansen led with 13 while Owen Schuette added 12 and Nash Wernsing 11. Sacred Heart will travel to Dieterich Thursday.

SEB was led by Wehrle with 16.

At St. Elmo

At Dieterich

Dieterich and Stewardson-Strasburg split victories during Tuesday evening action.

Stew-Stras claimed the seventh-place contest, 34-32. Stew-Stras held a 13-2 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back with a 10-5 second period lead. Stew-Stras held an 18-12 halftime lead.

Stew-Stras led 25-18 after the third quarter. Dieterich then mounted a comeback with a 14-9 run only to fall short.

Stew-Stras was led in scoring by Weston Spannagel and Weston Friese with eight points each.

Dieterich was led by W. Goeckner with 19.

In the eighth-grade game, Stew-Stras edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back with a 17-8 run to lead 23-15 at halftime. Dieterich continued to push farther ahead and led 31-20 going into the final quarter and finished with a 43-29 victory.

Alex Schottman led the way with 16 points while Bryce Bohnhoff chipped in with 12 for the winners.

Stew-Stras was led by Eli Jones with 12 and Joe Holland with 10.
