Effingham Wins Coles Co. Girls Tournament Crown

Effingham High School was crowned the champion of the Coles County Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Friday.

The Hearts claimed a 57-42 victory over Sullivan to advance to the championship game. EHS held a 26-21 halftime lead. Sullivan came back with a 13-12 third quarter lead to pull within 38-34 going into the final quarter. The Hearts then put it in high gear with a 19-8 final period run.

Alyssa Martin tallied 22 points for the Hearts, hitting nine field goals and four of five at the line.

Then in the championship contest, EHS ripped out to a 26-11 lead on Mattoon in the opening quarter. Sidney Donaldson nailed two trifectas and was one of two at the line for seven points. Bria Beals knocked in two three-pointers and Alyssa Martin hit for six points.

The Hearts had a 13-9 second period to lead 39-20 at halftime.

Mattoon came back with a slight 10-7 third quarter edge but EHS went out at 13-4 in the final quarter as Averie Wolfe hit two three-pointers.

The Hearts had even scoring as three players finished in double digits. Martin and Donaldson had 14 points each. Martin hit seven field goals while Donaldson hit five field goals, three from trifecta land and was one of three at the line. Wolfe chipped in with 12.

In a barn-burner, Teutopolis and Effingham St. Anthony squared off in game 15 of the tourney and the contest went double overtime.

The Wooden Shoes pulled out an 80-78 victory.

St. Anthony held a 12-7 opening quarter lead but  T-town came back with a 20-14 second quarter to lead 27-26 at halftime. The Shoes had a 46-41 lead after three quarters. But here came the Bulldogs. Adysen Rios scored eight points and Stacie Vonderheide seven in the final quarter 18-13 run to tie the score at 59-59 sending the contest into the first overtime period.

Both teams tallied 11. Nancy Ruholl was the catalyst for St. Anthony with 10 of the 11 points. Malea Helmink led T-town with eight of the 11 points.

The second overtime went to the Wooden Shoes with a 10-8 run for the victory.

Three players hit double figures for T-town. Anna Probst led the way with 27 points on nine field goals, four of those three-pointers, and five of six at the line. Helmink finished with 18 on six field goals and six of seven at the line. Chloe Probst added 12 points.

The Bulldogs were led by Vonderheide with 30 points on 10 field goals, two of those from three-point range, and eight of 11 at the line. Ruholl added 29 on seven field goals, three from trifecta land and 12 of 14 at the line.

T-town then claimed the fifth place game with a 64-24 trouncing of Champaign Central. The Shoes led 32-17 at halftime and never looked back.

A. Probst scored 16 on eight field goals and Helmink tallied 15 points on six field goals and three of six at the line. Helmink pulled down 10 rebounds and had two steals along with Allie Ruholl. Summer Wall led in assists with three.

St. Anthony then claimed the seventh-place contest over Charleston, 67-36.

The Bulldogs ripped out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Ruholl led in points with 22 on nine field goals, four from trifecta land. Vonderheide added 20 on eight field goals, one a three-pointer and three of three at the line. She had four rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Rios finished with four rebounds, four assists and six steals.
