Altamont Boys Third At Sesser-Valier, WSS To Play For Title At Tri-County, C'land Drops Two, Neoga Eighth At Monticello

SESSER -- Altamont HIgh School captured the third place contest at the Sesser-Valier Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory Thursday.

Altamont edged Red Bud, 44-42.

Red Bud edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead and held a 20-15 halftime tally.

Red Bud continued to push ahead with a 9-8 third quarter to lead 29-23 going into the final quarter.

Altamont suddenly came to life and connected on 11 of 15 free throws and five baskets to pull out a 21-13 final period to win 44-42.

Kade Milleville hit three two-pointers in the final period and a free throw for seven of his total nine points. Aden McManaway did not score through the first three quarters but put on a show from the free throw line with eight of 10 and hit a basket for 10 points. Kaidyn Miller added two free throws and Eli Miller a basket.

K. Miller finished with 12 points while McManaway added 10 in the victory.

Goreville won the tournament championship with a 66-57 win over Waltonville. The consolation championship went to DuQuoin over Sesser-Valier 59-54. Marissa claimed seventh place with a 53-49 win over New Athens.

At Kansas

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg moved into the championship game of the Tri-County Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Hatchets won twice Thursday, beating Paris 63-51 and Chrisman 59-35.

In the first victory, Paris ran out to a 22-12 opening quarter lead. Windsor/-Stew Stras came back with a 20-9 run to tie the score at 31-31 at halftime. Paris moved ahead 45-44 after the third quarter.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then had an 18-6 final quarter to pull out the win.

Connor Manhart led the way with eight field goals, seven of those from three-point range, and two of two at the line for 25 points. Also in double figures were Nathaniel Gracey with 11 and Jackson Gurgel with 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then took the early lead on Chrisman and went on for a 24-point victory.

The Hatchets edged out to a 16-13 opening quarter lead and took that to 32-20 at halftime and 49-27 in the third quarter.

Gurgel led the way with 19 points on six field goals, two of those three-pointers and five of five at the line. Manhart and Gracey added 11 each and Rylan Rincker added 10.

In other games Lawrenceville won over Westville 79-30, Martinsville edged Paris 49-47 and Lawrenceville downed Tri-County 66-32.

At Vandalia

Cumberland suffered two losses at the 51st Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Pirates fell to Okaw Valley 59-33. Okaw Valley held a 31-7 halftime lead. Both teams scored 20 in the third quarter but Okaw Valley took the final quarter with an 8-6 count.

Cumberland was led by Kaleb Bierman with seven points on three field goals and a free throw.

Nokomis then edged Cumberland 41-40. The Pirates held a 13-11 opening quarter lead but Nokomis moved ahead 23-16 at halftime and held a 35-25 lead going into the final period. Cumberland mounted a furious 15-6 rally only to fall a point short.

Reed Miller and Zack Harmon led with nine points each.

The tournament will finish out Friday.

Neoga finished eighth at the Monticello Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

Neoga fell to Paxton-Buckley-Loda 48-30 in the seventh place contest.

Tuscola was the champion, downing Clinton, 62-54 for the title.
