St. Anthony, T-town Claim Wins at Effingham/T-town Christmas Classic

Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis were winners in opening round play of the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Boys Basketball Classic Thursday.

 

St. Anthony beat Mattoon 59-56 in overtime. The Bulldogs edged out to a 15-14 opening quarter lead but the Green Wave moved ahead 33-30 at halftime.

St. Anthony came back with a 9-7 third quarter run to pull within a point going into the final quarter. The Bulldogs had a 16-15 final period to knot the score at 55-55 sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, St. Anthony had a 4-1 edge for the victory.

Collin Westendorf and Brock Fearday provided the one-two scoring punch for St. Anthony with 20 points each. Westendorf hit seven field goals, two from three-point range and was four of four at the free throw line. Fearday connected on eight field goals, two three-pointers and was two of three at the line.

Teutopolis handed Pleasant Plains a 46-35 loss.

Pleasant Plains held an 11-10 opening quarter lead but T-town came back with a 14-11 second quarter to lead 24-22 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes kept the pressure on with a 22-13 second half for the win.

Two players hit double digits for the Shoes. Garrett Gaddis led the way with 13 points on three field goals, one a three-pointer, and six of seven at the line. Joey Niebrugge added 12 on five field goals, one a three-pointer and one free throw.

Newton and Effingham both fell in the tourney openers.

Highland downed Newton by a 67-58 count. Highland led 34-25 at halftime. The Eagles played Highland to a 33-33 second half and couldn't get over that first half deficit.

Newton was led by Caden Nichols with seven field goals, five from three-point range, for 19 points. Parker Wolf added 17 and Dylan Gier 12.

Centennial claimed a 62-29 win over Effingham.

Centennial ripped out to a 30-5 opening quarter lead and led 45-18 at halftime.

The winners did not have a player in double figures. O'Neil Johnson led 12 players with nine points.

Effingham was led by Rylan Pals with seven.

In other Thursday games, Lutheran North beat Seneca 55-45, Lincoln Way East downed Belvidere 75-38, Oak Lawn won over Chicago Brooks 57-43 and Dixon defeated Charleston 49-42.
