EHS Takes Two Wins At Coles Co. Tourney; St. A, Teutopolis Split

Effingham High School opened its stay at the Coles County Girls Basketball Tournament with two victories while Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis were both 1-1.

The Hearts competed at Charleston High School where they defeated Champaign Central 68-34 and Danville, 60-22.

In the game against Champaign, EHS held an 18-10 opening quarter lead behind Alyssa Martin's basket and five of six at the line. The Hearts continued on with a 16-10 second period to lead 34-20 at halftime. Bria Beals hit a three-pointer and two free throws while Sidney Donaldson added six points.

The Hearts kept the pressure on with a 15-9 third period to lead 49-29 and finished out with a strong 19-5 final quarter.

Four players hit double figures for the Hearts. Martin led the way with 17 on five field goals and seven of nine at the line. Beals added 12 and Donaldson and Bella Austin scored 11 each.

The Hearts then faced Danville and came out a 60-22 winner. EHS ran off to a 20-5 opening quarter lead and led 40-12 at halftime.

EHS had two players finish in double figures. Martin hit four field goals and five of seven free throws for 14 points while Wolfe hit six field goals, two of those three-pointers, also for 14 points.

St. Anthony and Teutopolis competed at Mattoon High School.

The Bulldogs fell in their opener against Mattoon, 55-42. St. Anthony held a 15-10 openign quarter lead but  Mattoon came back with an 18-10 second period to lead 28-25 at halftime. The Green Wave continued on in the second half with a 27-17 run to claim the victory.

St. Anthony was led by Stacie Vonderheide with five field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of six at the line for 16 while Nancy Ruholl chipped in with 11.

The Bulldogs then handed Mahomet-Seymour a 60-38 loss. St. Anthony ran out to an 18-7 opening quarter lead and led 31-20 at halftime. Vonderheide got the Bulldogs off in the right direction, scoring 10 points in that opening quarter and adding seven more in the second period.

Vonderheide continued on with eight points in the third quarter as the two teams played to a 10-10 tie. The Bulldogs then had a 19-8 final period run as Vonderheide added nine more.

Vonderheide finished with 13 field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of eight at the line for 34 points. Also in double figures was Ruholl with 11.

Teutopolis split victories. The Wooden Shoes defeated Marion, 52-35. T-town edged out to a 16-15 opening quarter lead and led 26-23 at halftime.

The Wooden Shoes then went on an 18-6 third period run to lead 44-25 and never looked back.

The Shoes were led by Chloe Probst with 18 points while Mollie Ruholl chipped in with 12. Isabelle Zerrusen led in rebounds with seven and Malea Helmink added six. Summer Wall had five steals and two assists. Anna Probst had two assists.

Galesburg then handed the Shoes a 58-53 loss in overtime. The Shoes held a 24-23 halftime lead but Galesburg came back to lead 37-34 after the third quarter. But the Shoes came back with a 17-14 final period to tie the scoring, sending the contest into overtime where Galesburg had a 7-2 run for the victory.

T-town was led by Kelsey Niemerg with 21 points on six field goals, two from three-point range, and eight of 10 at the line. Niemerg led in steals with seven. Probst led in rebounds with five. Wall and M. Ruholl had two assists each.

All three teams are back in in action today with the finals. St. Anthony and Teutopolis will square off at 11:30 a.m. at Mattoon. Effingham will meet Sullivan at 1 p.m. at Charleston.
