Neoga's Campbell Reaches 1,000 Point Mark, Altamont Wins Twice, Newton Splits, North Clay Wins

MONTiCELLO -- Neoga High School's Haylee Campbell not only guided her team to a 52-48 victory over Ridgeview in the Monticello Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday, she also achieved a goal.

Campbell finished with 15 points on five field goals and four of seven at the line as the Indians won, she also went over 1,000 points for her career. Campbell came into the contest needing four points.

Neoga trailed Ridgeview 14-13 after the opening quarter but came back with an 11-8 second period to move into a 24-22 halftime lead. Neoga then put the game away with an 18-7 third quarter surge.

Also in double figures were Atalie Osborn with 12 and Brynn Richards with 11. Richards also has a chance to make it three Neoga players in three years to reach 1,000 career points. The junior is standing a 534 going into today's contest and is averaging 15.6 points per game as a junior. She could make the 1,000 points next year as a senior.

Campbell is the 17th girl in Neoga girls basketball history to reach the 1,000 point milestone.

In other games Wednesday, Tuscola trounced Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 61-17, Tri-Valley downed Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley 46-43, Monticello won in overtime over Clinton, 49-42, Tuscola defeated GCMS, 62-52 and Paxton-Buckley-Loda edged Tri-Valley, 46-43.

Robinson Holidaze Hoopla

Altamont captured wins Wednesday and Thursday at the Robinson Holidaze Hoopla.

The Indians won Wednesday over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 66-31. The Indians sailed out to a 15-2 opening quarter lead as Grace Nelson hit two baskets and two free throws for six points and Brianna Grunloh nailed a three-pointer.

Altamont then ran the score up to 38-5 at halftime. Nelson went on an 11-point run while Claire Boehm, Peyton Osteen and Skylie Klein hit a three-pointer each.

The Indians kept the momentum flowing in the third quarter with a 23-16 run to lead 61-21.

Nelson finished with 11 field goals and three of three at the line for 26 points while Kaylee Lurkins nailed five baskets for 10 points.

Then in Thursday early competition, Altamont defeated Terre Haute South, 73-32. The Indians again ripped out to an early lead, going 22-6 in the opening quarter and 43-21 at halftime.

Nelson tallied 29 through three quarters of play. She hit 12 field goals, three of those three-pointers, and was two of four at the line. Also in double figures was P. Osteen with 12 points.

In other games Wednesday, Robinson beat Tri-County 62-39, Sullivan won over Oswego 47-34 and North Central downed Terre Haute South, 62-26.

Altamont will face North Central at 4:30 p.m. in its second game of the day Thursday. The tournament finishes out with the finals Friday.

At Fairfield

Newton played two games on opening day at the Merry Mule Tournament in Fairfield Wednesday.

The Eagles opened by trouncing Murphysboro, 80-10. The Eagles ripped out to a 26-0 opening quarter lead and led 46-3 at halftime.

Camryn Martin led the way with 24 points on 10 field goals, one from three-point range, and three of three at the line. Lilly Kessler scored 17, Karasyn Martin 12 and Claire Probst 10.

Kessler led in rebounds with eight. C. Martin had five assists and nine steals.

In the final game of the evening, Carmi edged Newton, 46-40. Carmi held an 18-14 opening quarter lead and led 27-21 at halftime.

The Eagles came back with a 12-6 third quarter to tie the score at 33-33. But Carmi regained the momentum with a 13-7 final period for the victory.

C. Martin led the Eagles with 14 points on six field goals and one of two at the line. Kessler added 13 points and 10 rebounds. C. Martin and K. Martin had four assists each. C. Martin led in steals with five.

 At Centralia

North Clay (Louisville) opened its stay at the Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Winterfest Tournament Wednesday with a victory.

The Cardinals defeated host CORL 47-42.

North Clay is back in action against Staunton at 3 p.m. today.
