WSS Wins, Neoga, Altamont, Cumberland Lose At Boys Tourneys

KANSAS -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened its stay at the Tri-County Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory Wednesday.

The Hatchets edged out to a 21-17 opening quarter lead on Martinsville then had a 22-8 second period run to lead 43-25 at halftime. Martinsville came back with a 17-11 third period but Windsor/Stew-Stras had a 17-9 final quarter for the 71-51 victory.

Jackson Gurgel led the way for the winners with 27 points on nine field goals that included four three-pointers and was five of five at the free throw line. Also in double figures were Connor Manhart with 19 and Nathaniel  Gracey with 12.

Windsor/Stew-Stras improved to 5-8 on the season.

In other games, Westville beat Tri-County, 47-42 and Paris won over Chrisman 55-42.

Six games are on tap today. Windsor/Stew-Stras will meet Paris at noon and then take on Chrisman at 3 p.m. The tournament comes to a close Friday evening.

At Monticello

Neoga fell in the Monticello Holiday Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Indians took on Ridgeview and lost in a close 51-48 contest.

Neoga actually stepped out to a 16-8 opening quarter lead and still held a lead at halftime, 30-26. Both teams tallied eight points in the third period before Colfax Ridgeview went on a 17-10 final quarter run to pull out the victory.

Trey Sheehan was the lone Neoga player in double figures. Sheehan hit six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was five of six at the line for 18 points. Gavin Ray led in rebounds with seven. Sheehan and Carter Young had two assists each. Young led in steals with two.

Colfax Ridgeview had seven three-pointers and were 18 of 24 at the line. Neoga hit six three-pointers and was six of eight at the line.

In other games, Oakwood defeated Gibson City/Melvin/Sibley, 69-55, Tuscola won over Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 51-31, Clinton defeated Monticello, 59-56, Oakwood beat Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 57-46 and Tuscola downed GCMS, 78-39.

Neoga will face Paxton-Buckley-Loda at 10 a.m. for seventh place.

Clinton takes on Tuscola for the championship at 7:30, Monticello meets Oakwood at 3:30 for third place and Ridgeview takes on GCMS at 11:30 for fifth place.

Sesser-Valier Tournament

Goreville was a 67-50 winner over Altamont in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament Wednesday.

Goreville took the early lead, 19-15 after the opening quarter. Dillan Elam kept Altamont close, connecting on two three-pointers and was three of four at the line for nine points.

The Black Cats held a 34-30 halftime lead as both teams scored 15 in the second period. Goreville then went on a 15-8 third quarter run and finished out with an 18-12 final quarter for the victory.

Altamont had one player in double figures. Elam led the way with seven field goals, three from trifecta land, and six of eight at the line for 23.

In other games, Waltonville downed Red Bud 59-44, Sesser-Valier took a 68-65 overtime win over Marissa and DuQuoin defeated New Athens, 61-57.

Today's finals have Waltonville against Goreville for the championship at 7 p.m. Altamont squares off against Red Bud for third place at 3 p.m. Sesser-Valier faces DuQuoin at 1:30 p.m. for the consolation championship. New Athens will meet Marissa at noon for seventh place.

 Vandalia Holiday Tournament

Cumberland dropped a contest against Vandalia in the second day of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament Wednesday.

The Vandals took a 16-5 opening quarter lead and were never headed in the 52-33 victory.

Vandalia led 31-17 at halftime and had a 21-16 second half.

Cumberland did not have a player reach double figures. Three players scored six points each, Blake McMechan, Cam Roedl and Reed Miller.

In other games Wednesday, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran defeated Meridian 50-46, Vandalia won over Nokomis 49-23, Shelbyville downed Okaw Valley 69-46, Meridian edged Flora 56-52, Greenville beat Pana 47-34 and Shelbyville defeated Nokomis 42-35.

Cumberland has two games today. The Pirates meet Okaw Valley at 11 a.m. and then take on Nokmis at 3:30 p.m.

The tournament comes to a close Friday.
