Altamont, BSE, Newton, WSS Win In Girls Basketball

ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School stepped out to a 20-12 opening quarter lead and handed Woodlawn a 64-56 loss in girls basketball Thursday evening.

The Indians went on a three-point shooting spree in that opening quarter. Grace Nelson connected on one three-pointer and hit three regular field goals and a free throw for 10 points. Brianna Grunloh, Claire Boehm and Skylie Klein hit a three-pointer each.

Woodlawn came back with a 20-15 second period to pull within 32-27 at halftime. Nelson kept the Indians afloat with four baskets and three free throws for 11 points.

Altamont then had a 12-11 third period edge to lead 47-43 going into the final period.

The Indians kept the pressure on with a 17-13 final quarter run as Nelson scored 12 points.

Nelson finished with 15 field goals, one from three-point range, and eight of nine at the line for 39.

Woodlawn had four players in double figures. Burkett led the way with 21 points.

Altamont claimed the junior varsity contest, 44-29.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo took the first quarter lead and never looked back in a 47-28 victory over Nokomis Thursday evening.

Dayana Haslett led the way in the opening quarter with two baskets and a free throw in a 15-6 run.

Presley Williams connected on a three-pointer in that opening quarter and another one in the second period as BSE led 25-14 at halftime.

BSE had an 11-7 third period as Lexie Seabaugh added to her total with two more baskets and the homestanders finished out with an 11-7 final period.

Three players were in double digits for the winners. Seabaugh led the way with seven field goals for 14 points. Day. Haslett chipped in with 13 while Wililams added 10.

In the junior varsity contest, Nokomis was a 48-33 winner. BSE was led by Addie Sasse with 12 points and Madi Miller with nine.

At Cowden

Newton improved its record to 8-6 on the season with a 60-37 non-conference victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thursday.

The Eagles edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and then put on a 23-9 second period run to lead 33-18 at halftime.

Karasyn Martin led four players in double figures for the Eagles. Martin tallied seven field goals, two from three-point range, for 16 points. Lilly Kessler added 14, Camryn Martin 13 and Izzy Meinhart 10.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by Macee Rodman and Ruby Stuckemeyer with 10 points each.

Nweton also claimed the junior varsity game, 36-26. Allie Hermann led the way with 11 points. The Eagles are 8-1 on the season.

At Arthur

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened its stay at the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights Classic Thursday with a victory.

The Hatchets downed Heritage, 54-22. Windsor/Stew-Stras stepped out to a 16-6 opening quarter lead as Ella Kinkelaar nailed three baskets and a free throw for eight points. Kendra Hayes added a three-poimter and two free throws for five.

Hayes then took over the scoring in the second quarter 23-8 run. Hayes hit three baskets and a free throw for eight points while Kinkelaar added two three-pointers. The Hatchets led 39-14 at halftime.

WSS had a 15-8 second half as the scoring slowed down. Samantha Hayes led in the third quarter with six points and Clarissa Johnson hit a three-pointer.

K. Hayes led the way with 15 points on five field goals, two from three-point range, and three of four at the line. Kinkelaar chipped in with 14 and S. Hayes added 13.

In other games, Chrisman won over Rantoul, 44-38, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond downed Unity Christian, 51-21 and Decatur Eisenhower defeated Shelbyville, 62-39.

The tournament continues today with Windsor/Stew-Stras facing Decatur Eisenhower at 6 p.m. and Unity Christian against Chrisman at 7:30, both in the East Gym. Games in the West gym include Shelbyville against Heritage at 6 and Rantoul taking on ALAH at 7:30.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday with a four-game session beginning at 10 a.m. and then the finals beginning at 3 p.m.
