Highland Hands Effingham 38-34 Defeat In Girls Basketball

Highland High School put together an 11-7 final quarter to hand Effingham a 38-34 loss in girls basketball Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead on the lone scoring of Larissa Taylor. Taylor connected on four baskets and was three of three at the line for the 11 points.

Alyssa Martin hit eight of the Hearts 10 points on three baskets and two of three at the line.

The Hearts then went on a 16-9 second period run to pull ahead 26-20 at halftime. Bella Austin connected on two three-pointers while Bria Beals had a basket and was two of two at the line while Martin was two of two at the ilne.

But, here came the Bulldogs. Highland had a 7-1 third period run to knot the score at 27-27 going into the final quarter. The lone baskets in the quarter came from Abby Schultz and Taylor. The Hearts lone point was a free throw from Beals. The Hearts missed six shots in the quarter.

Highland kept the pressure on with an 11-7 final period for the victory. Schultz added a basket and two free throws and Lauren Maas two field goals.

Taylor led the way for the winners with 20 points on eight field goals and four of five free throws. She also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Effingham was led by Martin with 11 points on three field goals and five of seven at the line. Saige Althoff led in rebounds with seven while Austin pulled down six.

The Hearts finished with only 29.2 percent from the field for the game and were 72.7 percent at the line.

Highland hit 36.6 percent from the field and 46.6 percent at the line.
