 FARINA -- South Central High School improved to 7-3 on the season with a 53-36 non-conference boys basketball victory over Sandoval Tuesday evening.

The Cougars stepped out to a 15-6 opening quarter lead as Callaway Smith nailed a three-pointer and a regular basket for five points while Max Magnus added a three-pointer.

Sandoval fought back with a 16-14 second period but the Cougars held a 29-22 halftime lead. Jacob Smith kept the Cougars in the lead with six points while Westin Neilson added a three-pointer.

South Central came out in the third quarter with a 15-5 run as Seth Bergmann and Kage Hiestand scored five points each.

Two players scored in double figures for South Central. Bergmann led the way with 14 points on five field goals, one from three-point range, and three of four at the line. Hiestand tallied 11.

At Newton

Charleston ran out to a 21-14 opening quarter lead on Newton but the Eagles came back with a 22-15 second quarter to knot the score at 36-36 at halftime.

Newton then got their offense going while its defense held Charleston to only 12 second half points. Meanwhile the Eagles put together a 30-point second half for the 18-point winning margin.

Caden Nichols led the way for Newton with 26 points on 10 field goals, five of those from three-point range, and two of two at the line. Parker Wolf hit six field goals and was nine of 10 at the free throw line for 21 points. Also in double figures was Dylan Gier with 13 points.

The Eagles nailed 14 of 18 from the free throw line while Charleston was only two of eight.

Newton now sports an 8-3 record.

At Cisne

North Clay (Louisville) picked up a victory over Cisne in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals won 56-53 to imprve to 4-7 on the season.

North Clay also claimed the junior varsity game, 55-31.

 

At Altamont

This game ended up being decided in the last seconds as Casey-Westfield pulled out a 55-53 non-conference victory over Altamont Tuesday evening.

The Warriors held a 13-10 opening quarter lead but Altamont came back with a 16-13 second period to tie the score at 26-26 at halftime. Dillan Elam connected for five points on a three-pointer and a regular basket while Eli Miller hit a three-pointer.

Casey-Westfield then came back with a 14-11 third period to lead 40-37 going into the final quarter. Kaidyn Miller and D. Elam kept the Indians close with four points each.

Then in the final period, Altamont came back with a 16-15 run but Casey-Westfield claimed the victory in the final seconds as Hayden Parcel hit a basket for the game-winner.

Altamont was led by D. Elam with 18 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of five at the line. K. Miller added 13 and E. Miller 11.

The Indians drop to 4-3 on the season and are back in action with another non-conference matchup Thursday at Marshall.

Casey-Westfield claimed the junior varsity win, 59-51.

At Lawrenceville

Dieterich stayed close until the third quarter when Lawrenceville went on a 20-6 run and finished out with a 74-50 non-conference victory Tuesday evening.

Lawrenceville edged out to a 15-13 opening quarter lead. Lucas Westendorf and Caleb Gephart scored two baskets each for the Movin' Maroons.

The Indians had a 24-17 second quarter to lead 39-30 at halftime. Gephart continued to keep Dieterich in the contest with 10 points on two three-pointers and two regular baskets.

Lawrenceville then came out after halftime and put the game on ice with a 20-6 third period run. The Indians were led by Pargin with 27 and Jenkins with 26.

Gephart led the Maroons with 19 points on eight field goals, two from three-point range, and one of two at the line.

Shelbyville put together a big offense and handed Neoga a 63-36 loss in a non-conference matchup Tuesday.

The Rams went on a run early, taking a 22-6 opening quarter lead and led 42-15 at halftime.

Neoga's offense came from four points in the opening quarter by Trey Sheehan and six points in the second period from Gavin Ray.

The Rams and Indians played to a 9-9 third quarter and a 12-12 final period.

Shelbyville was led by Chase Wells with 19 points, Brody Boehm with 17 and Jack Jouisch with 12.

Neoga was led by Ray with 11 points on four field goals and three of four at the line, and Sheehan with 10.

Cumberland suffered a tough second quarter, scoring only one point, and Cerro Gordo/Bement took a 51-41 victory Tuesday evening.

The Pirates edged out to a 12-10 opening quarter lead as Zach Harmon scored five points. But the second quarter was a killer as CGB had a 12-1 run to lead 22-13 at halftime. Tyson Moore went on a run, scoring nine of the 12 points for CGB.

Cumberland did not have a player in double figures. Blake McMechan and Harmon led the way with nine points each.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown took a tough loss to Affton, 57-53 in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening.

Affton took a 17-13 opening quarter lead but SEB came back with a 16-11 second period to lead 29-28 at halftime.

Affton came back to tie the score in the third quarter 42-42 then had a 15-11 final period for the victory.

Adam Atwood led SEB with 19 points on six field goals, three from trifecta land, and four of seven at the line. Collin Maxey added 12 points on five field goals and two free throws.

St. Elmo/Brownstown actually had a higher shooting percentage from the field with 49 percent to 44 for Affton. But Affton connected on 10 of 13 from the line for 77 percent while SEB was six of 11 for 55 percent.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg was within one point at halftime but Okaw Valley came back with a 44-28 second half run for the 82-65 non-conference win Tuesday.

Okaw Valley edged out to an 18-17 opening quarter lead and held that one-point lead at halftime, 38-37.

Okaw Valley then went on a 21-15 third quarter run and finished strong.

Dickens led the way for the winners with 29 points.

Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 4-8 on the season while Okaw Valley evened its record at 5-5.

The Hatchets won the junior varsity game, 36-32.

Windsor/Stew-Stras isn't back in action until December 27 in the Tri-County Tournament against Martinsville.
