Bulldogs Hand Tigers Defeat, 50-46

Olney High School took control early and held the Bulldogs down through the first two quarters. But St. Anthony couldn't be contained in the second half and finished strong with a 50-46 non-conference boys basketball victory Tuesday evening. in a game heard on 979XFM.

The Tigers weren't particularly shooting well in the opening quarter but they put up 13 shots to eight for St. Anthony. Arjay Keller connected on a field goal, two free throws and a three-pointer to lead Olney with seven points while Ian Winkler added a basket and two free throws. Olney hit five of 13 field goals and were four of four at the free throw line.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony was struggling. Collin Westendorf put in a three-pointer and Brock Fearday a basket and that was it as the Bulldogs could hit on only two of eight shots.

The offensive end still didn't get started strong for the Bulldogs in the second quarter with only one basket in six attempts. St. Anthony outscored Olney 8-6 due in large part to six of eight from the free throw line. Ryan Schmidt connected on four of four.

The Bulldogs trailed Olney 21-13 at halftime.

St. Anthony finally got untracked in the third quarter as Westendorf was perfect with four baskets in four attempts and two of those from long distance range for 10 points. Schmidt also got on the scoring train, hitting three baskets, one from three-point range, and two of two free throws for nine. But Olney still held a one-point lead.

The Bulldogs then continued on with six of eight from field goal range and a perfect three of three at the line for a 15-10 final quarter to pull out the four-point victory.

Schmidt finished with 19 points to lead the way, hitting six of nine field goals and six of six at the line. Westendorf added 17 points on six of 10 from the field and two of two at the line.

Although they hit only 21.4 percent from the field in the first half, St. Anthony came back to finish with 54.8 percent for the game. The Bulldogs were 80 percent from the free throw line with 12 of 15.

Meanwhile, Olney finished with 48.3 percent from the field and were 93.3 percent from the line with 14 of 15. The Tigers had three players in double figures led by Rex Hallam with 16 and Keller and Casey Thomann with 10 each.

St. Anthony handed Olney only its second loss of the season with a 10-2 record. The Bulldogs matched the Tigers, also with a 10-2 record.

In the junior varsity game, St Anthony was a 65-38 winner. Aiden Lauritzen scored 12 and Henry Brent 10 for the Bulldogs. Keenan Griffith and Will Fearday were at nine each.
