Bulldogs, Cougars, Shoes Win, Eagles Split In Basketball

DIETERICH -- Effingham St. Anthony called at Dieterich Friday and picked up a 54-39 win as two National Trail Conference teams met.

The Movin' Maroons took a 12-11 opening quarter lead behind Lucas Westendorf's five points and two baskets from Landen Keck.

But the Bulldogs mounted a 16-9 second period to lead 27-21 at halftime. Collin Westendorf, who scored one basket in the opening quarter, came back with a 10-point run on five baskets to lead the way.

Caleb Gephart hit three baskets for the Maroons.

St. Anthony continued their run in the third quarter, outscoring Dieterich 13-9 to lead 40-30 going into the final period.

Brock Fearday got on a run with four baskets for eight points and Henry Brent connected on a three-pointer.

St. Anthony then had a 14-9 final period as Ryan Schmidt scored six and Nick Ruholl five.

Gephart added on eight more points to his total.

St. Anthony was led by B. Fearday with seven field goals and two of four at the line for 16 points. Westendorf chipped in with 13.

Dieterich was led by Gephart with seven field goals that included three trifectas and was one of two at the line for 18 points.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony ripped out to a 13-0 opening quarter lead and was a 55-18 winner. Will Fearday scored 15 points for the Bulldogs.

Dieterich was led by Boerngen and T. Niemerg with four each.

In a Saturday game, St. Anthony defeated Charleston in varsity action, 50-36.

The Bulldogs also won at the junior varsity level, 52-37 and the freshman/sophomore game, 56-38. No other information was available.

At Fairfield

Newton picked up a victory and suffered a loss during Friday and Saturday play.

In the Friday contest, the Eagles won over Robinson, 56-49. Newton edged ahead 17-14 in the first quarter and led 27-25 at halftime. Newton then came out with a 29-24 second half.

Caden Nichols scored 28 points for Newton on nine field goals, four from three-point range, and six of eight at the line. Dylan Gier also was in double figures with 14.

Newton fell to Fairfield, 60-51 in Saturday competition.

The Eagles fell behind 23-14 at halftime. Fairfield came out with a 25-16 third quarter run.

Nichols scored 18 points for the winners, hitting seven baskets that included three trifectas, and was one of one at the line. Gier contributed 14 points.

Newton is now 7-3 on the season and returns to action Tuesday, playing host to Charlseton.

At Martinsville

South Central took the early lead on Martinsville and captured a 48-33 non-conference victory Friday.

The Cougars edged out to a 10-6 lead as Seth Bergmann hit a regular basket and a three-pointer to lead the way.

South Central held an 18-12 halftime lead as Westin Neilson nailed two three-pointers.

South Central then had a 30-21 second half run.

Two players finished in double figures. Max Magnus led the way with  15 points on five field goals, two from three-point range, and three of three at the line. Neilson chipped in with 11 and Bergmann finished with nine.

The Cougars improved to 6-3 on the season.

South Central won the junior varsity game, 44-13.

At Greenville

Teutopolis picked up junior varsity and varsity victories at the Greenville Shootout Saturday.

The varsity squad defeated Columbia, 49-36. Columbia held a 17-11 opening quarter lead but the Wooden Shoes came back with a 13-5 second period to lead 24-22 at halftime.

The Shoes continued on in the second half with a 25-14 run for the winning margin.

Two players finished in double figures. Joey Niebrugge led the way with six field goals for 12 points while Garrett Gaddis hit four field goals, three of those three-pointers, for 11.

In the junior varsity contest, T-town was a 46-21 winner.  The Shoes held a 28-6 halftime lead. Alex Kremer led the way with 12 points.

At Greenville Shootout
