WSS Moves Into Title Game of St. Elmo Tourney; N. Clay Advances At Tourney, EHS Falls To Charleston

ST. ELMO -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School moved into the championship game of the 63rd Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory Thursday evening.

The Hatchets handed Hillsboro a 72-67 loss. The Hiltoppers put together a 31-21 opening quarter lead as two players, Nathan Matous and Jace Stewart went on runs. Matoush hit three trifectas and a regular basket for 11 points while Stewart added 10.

WSS kept close with a run by Connor Manhart who connected on three trifectas and two regular baskets for 10 points. Jackson Gurgel added two three-pointers and a free throw for seven.

Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a slight 13-10 second period to pull within 41-34 at halftime. Gurgel provided eight points while Manhart added five more.

After halftime, the Hatchets took the momentum and ran with it, outscoring the Hiltoppers 22-10 to move ahead 56-51. Gurgel continued on his run with nine points while Nathaniel Gracey chipped in with five, Manhart four and Aiden Sayers four.

The two teams played to a 16-16 final quarter and the game went to the Hatchets.

Gurgel led the way with 26 points on nine field goals, three from three-point range, and five of eight at the line. Manhart chipped in with 23 points on seven field goals, three from long-range, and six of six at the line. Sayers added 10.

In the other contest Thursday evening, Patoka/Odin won over Ramsey, 78-72 in the consolation bracket.

The tournament continues tonight as St. Elmo/Brrownstown squares off against Cumberland at 7:45 in the winner bracket. In the consolation bracket, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City faces Mulberry Grove at 6:15.

The tournament will come to a close Saturday with the seventh-place game at 3 p.m., the consolation championship at 4:30, third place at 6 and the championship at 7:30.

At Wayne City

North Clay (Louisville) was a winner in the Wayne City Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Cardinals defeated host Wayne City, 59-45.

In other games,  Edwards County won over Wayne City JV, 70-37 and Thompson downed Sandoval, no score listed.

North Clay (3-6) will now face either Linton-Stockton or Lovejoy at 4 p.m. Saturday in the consolation championship. Those two teams play tonight.

 

At Effingham

Effingham played host to Charleston in Apollo Conference action Thursday evening and fell, 62-33.

The Trojans took an 18-10 opening quarter lead and led 37-15 at halftime.

The Hearts had one player hit double figures. Cannon Bockhorn led the way with 10 points while seven players scored in the contest.

Bockhorn connected on three baskets that included one three-pointer and was three of three at the line.

The Trojans finished with nine three-pointers and had 10 players score in the contest led by Tyler Oakley with 15 and Luke Bonnstetter with 11.
