Effingham St. Anthony High School's Brock Fearday got his team rolling in the first quarter as the Bulldogs downed Newton, 50-43 in boys basketball action Tuesday evening.

Fearday connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for half of his team's point total as the Bulldogs took a 16-9 lead.

Both teams tallied nine points each in the second quarter and the Bulldogs held a 25-18 halftime lead.

St. Anthony continued to hold a lead in the third quarter with a 12-11 tally. B. Fearday added six more points.

In the final quarter, Collin Westendorf hit five free throws.

Newton's Drake Wolf scored 10 of his team's final quarter points on a 14-13 edge but the Eagles couldn't make up that opening quarter run by St. Anthony. 

B. Fearday finished with 18 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line. Westendorf tallied 17 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and was six of 10 at the line.

Newton's Wolf finished with 18 points, 16 coming in the second half. He connected on three trifectas and three regular baskets and was three of five at the line. Also in double figures for Newton was Dylan Gier with 13.

The Eagles dropped to 6-2 on the season and return to action Friday at Robinson.

The Bulldogs also claimed the junior varsity contest by a 56-25 score.

Henry Brent led St. Anthony with 15 points while Aiden Lauritzen added 12 and Will Fearday chipped in with 11.

Newton was led by Kody Bergbower with eight points.

At Casey

Casey-Westfield took the early lead on Neoga and went on for a 58-30 non-conference victory Tuesday evening.

The Warriors zipped out to a 14-2 opening quarter lead as Ryan Richards connected on two three-pointers.

The lead went to 36-8 at halftime as Richards continued on with seven points and four other players scored.

Richards finished with 21 points to lead the Warriors. He connected on nine field goals that included three trifectas.

Neoga was led by Trey Sheehan with 10 points on four field goals and two of two at the line.

At Carlyle

Carlyle played host to Altamont and captured a 54-41 victory in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

Carlyle edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead and held a 23-15 halftime lead.

The Indians trailed by 10 going into the final quarter but couldn't get over the hump as Carlyle had an 18-15 scoring run. 

Four Carlyle players finished in double figures.

Altamont was led by Dillan Elam with 14 points and Kaidyn Miller with 10. Eli Miller chipped in with nine and Aden McManaway eight.

Altamont won the junior varsity contest, 53-41.

St. Elmo Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Hillsboro were winners Tuesday evening at the St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Tournament.

In the opening contest, Hillsboro downed Ramsey, 71-32.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Patoka/Odin, 63-58 in overtime.

The two teams played to a 16-16 opening quarter tie. Connor Manhart and Jackson Gurgel scored six points each.

The Hatchets moved into a 26-22 halftime lead as Gurgel added seven more points.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had a 16-13 third period to move ahead 42-35. Manhart tallied five points.

But, here came Patoka/Odin in the final quarter with a 20-13 run to knot the score at 55-55 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Windsor/Stew-Stras connected on its free throws, hitting six of six for six of the eight points and pulled out the victory.

Manhart led the way in scoring with 22 points on seven field goals, five from three-point range, and three of tthree at the line. Gurgel added 18 on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of three at the line.

The Hatchets finished with 13 of 15 free throws while Patoka/Odin connected on eight of 15.

Windsor/Stew-Stras improved to 3-6 on the season and returns to action in the tournament Thursday, facing HIllsboro at 7:45 p.m. In the opening game of the evening, Ramsey takes on Patoka/Odin in consolation bracket action at 6:15.

In tonight's contests, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Mulberry Grove square off at 6:15 followed by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Cumberland meeting at 7:45.

Wayne City Holiday Tournament

Three games were contested at the Wayne City Holiday Tournament Tuesday evening.

Cisne downed Edwards County (Albion), 61-47 while Crab Orchard won over Lovejoy, 72-46. Grayville also tallied 72 points in downing Wayne City, 72-45.

Tonight's games feature, North Clay (Louisville) against Webber Township (Bluford) at 6 p.m. followed by Crab Orchard taking on Wayne City JV at 7:30.
