PANA -- Effingham Junior High School claimed a victory and suffered a close loss in junior high boys basketball against Pana Sacred Heart Monday evening.

The Mustangs claimed the seventh-grade victory, 46-23. Effingham stepped out to a 22-10 first half lead and had a 24-13 second half.

Joel Flack led the way for the Mustangs with 14 points while Bryden Kade added eight.

In eighth-grade action, Pana Sacred Heart edged Effingham 36-35. Sacred Heart held a 12-4 opening quarter lead but the Msutangs came roaring back with a 12-2 second period to move ahead 16-14 at halftime.

The Mustangs continued to outscore Sacred Heart in the third period to lead 28-23. But Sacred Heart's Burns came back to hit three trifectas and a regular basket for 11 points as Sacred Heart pulled out the one-point victory.

Effingham's Jenner Pals kept the Mustangs close, scoring all seven points.

"This was a gift from us to them," said EJHS Coach Rod Wiethop. "We blew a four point lead and the ball with 17 seconds to go."

At Newton

Effingham Sacred Heart and Newton St. Thomas split victories Monday evening.

The Shamrocks claimed the seventh-grade contest, 50-27. Sacred Heart moved into an 8-3 opening quarter lead and led 19-11 at halftime.

Sacred Heart then had a 31-16 second half run.

Three players hit double figures for the Shamrocks. Gabe Traub led the way with 22 points while Mason Karolewicz added 11 and Logan Schoenoff 10.

Newton St. Thomas was led by Seaton with 10 points.

In eighth-grade play, St. Thomas ran out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and led 32-11 at halftime. The team went on for a 51-24 win.

Bartheleme tallied 20 points while Quinty Fulton added 18 for the winners.

Sacred Heart was led by Traub with nine points.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony and Taylorville each picked up a victory Monday evening.

The Bullpups won the seventh-grade contest, 40-27. St. Anthony raced out to a 14-1 opening quarter lead as Charlie Hoene and Charlie Bierman hit a three-pointer each and Blake Verdeyen connected for four points.

St. Anthony held a 22-7 halftime lead and never looked back in this one.

Verdeyen led the way with 14 points while Hoene added 13.

Taylorville captured the eighth-grade contest, 44-14.

Taylorville held a 21-9 halftime lead and had a 9-2 third quarter run.

St. Anthony was led by Johnny Gannaway with five points.

Teutopolis traveled to Casey-Westfield and handed the homestanders losses in both seventh- and eighth-grade play Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade contest, 49-20. T-town ripped out to a 19-3 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Blake Niemerg led 12 players who scored, with 11 points.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town led 25-9 at halftime and went on for a 56-23 win.

Jake Probst scored 19 and Eric Weidner added 11 for the Shoes.

At Casey

At Newton

Jasper County captured two victories over Martinsville in Monday evening play.

Cambell Ulm led the way for Jasper County in the seventh-grade contest with 13 points.

The winners took a 19-0 opening quarter lead and led Martinsville scoreless with an 18-0 third quarter for the 41-28 win.

Hank Huber was the top rebounder and Preston Harris the top defender.

Jasper County improved to 10-3.

In eighth-grade action, Jasper County improved to 11-2 with a 57-12 win over Martinsville.

Ian Kessler led with 12 points for the winners while Mack Huber added 10. Maddox Horner was the top defender and  Kessler the top rebounder.

Jasper County is 11-2 on the season.

At Oblong

Dieterich captured both victories over Oblong Monday evening.

Dieterich won the seventh-grade contest, 40-24.

Oblong held a 10-9 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back with an 11-1 second period run to lead 20-11 at halftime then had a 14-5 third period.

C. Bierman and R. McEven led the seventh-graders with 10 points each.

In eighth-grade play, Dieterich won 52-9.

Dieterich tore out to a 28-7 first half lead then held Oblong scoreless while pushing their lead to 49-6 after the third quarter.

Bryce Bohnhoff led the winners with 16 points.
