St. Anthony Wins, EHS Falls In Girls H.S. Basketball

The Bobcats took the opening quarter lead as Macee Rodman went on a tear. Rodman connected on three baskets including a three-pointer and was three of three at the line for 10 points.
CHBC ripped out to a 21-13 opening quarter lead. St. Anthony's Stacie Vonderheide held off the runaway, scoring seven points behind a basket and five of six at the line.
The Bulldogs took the momentum in the second quarter with a 25-13 run to lead 38-34 at halftime. Vonderheide continued her hot scoring with three baskets, one a three-pointer and three of three at the line for 10 points. Meanwhile Addyson Rios combined with Vonderheide and scored nine points on two baskets, one of those from three-point range, and a perfect four of four at the line.
The scoring calmed down in the second half as St. Anthony had a slight 11-9 third quarter edge to lead 49-43 going into the final period then held off CHBC with a 10-9 final quarter.
Vonderheide had a big game for the Bulldogs with 26 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, and 10 of 14 at the line. She pulled down 10 rebounds, had seven steals and seven assists. Rios added 18 points, had four rebounds and five steals. Addi Nuxoll had five rebounds. St. Anthony had a team total of 18 steals and 26 rebounds. They forced CHBC into 26 turnovers.
The Bulldogs connected on 19 of 34 free throws for 55.8 percent. CHBC shot a higher percentage in free throws but only had nine shots and hit eight of those.
Rodman led three players in double figures with 16 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of three at the line. Baya Fingo tallied 12 and Ruby Stuckemeyer 10.
Rodman led in assists with three and had four rebounds. Ines Seaz-Ferrer led in rebounds with five. Stuckemeyer led in blocks with three.
CHBC dropped to 6-5 on the season.
In the junior varsity contest, CHBC took a 14-10 victory and improved to 5-1 on the season. Saez-Ferrer led the way with five points.

At Effingham
Mattoon came calling and picked up an Apollo Conference victory over Effingham in girls basketball action Thursday evening on a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
The Green Wave took a 15-6 opening quarter lead and went on for a 63-52 win. Mattoon led 31-17 at halftime.
The Hearts came back with a 14-8 third period to pull within 39-31. But Mattoon got back on track with a 24-21 final quarter as Emily Maple went on a 13-point run. She hit three baskets, one a three-pointer, and was six of eight at the line.
EHS had two players in double digits. Alyssa Martin led the way with 20 points on eight of 12 field goals and four of four at the line. Also in double digits was Bella Austin with 13.
Mattoon was led by Maple with 27 points while Ella Conners added 14. The Green Wave finished with six three-pointers, three from Maple and three from Conners.
The Hearts dropped to 0-2 in the conference, 7-2 overall.
Mattoon improved to 1-0 in the conference, 8-0 overall.
