T-town Wins Title, St. Michael Claims Third At Seventh-Grade Girls State Tourneys

RIVERTON -- Teutopolis took the early lead and held on as Williamsville mounted a comeback in the final quarter to win the Class 7-2A State Girls Basketball championship Thursday at Riverton High School.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 6-5 opening quarter lead on Williamsville and led 14-12 at halftime.

T-town then had a 6-2 third quarter run to lead 20-14 going into the final quarter.

Williamsville mounted a comeback with an 11-7 final period surge, only to fall short as T-town claimed the 27-25 victory.

No Wooden Shoe finished in double figures but six players scored in the contest. Claire Probst led the way with seven points while Grace Martin and Maggie Drees added six each.

Williamsville was led by Lyla Legner with 11 points.

Five Teutopolis players finished in double digits during the entire tournament. Drees led the way with 27 points on seven field goals, one three-pointer, and 10 of 23 at the line. Martin tallied 22 total points on six field goals and 10 of 17 at the line. Probst scored a total of 15 while Lexi Hoene added 14 and Bella NIebrugge 11.

The Wooden Shoes hit 35 field goals and were 31 of 61 at the free throw line overall in the three games they played at State.

T-town ended the season with a 26-1 record while Williamsville finished at 25-2.

Third place went to Piasa Southwestern over Chillicothe, 25-21.

At Assumption

Sigel St. Michael claimed the third place contest of the Class 7-1A State Tournament held at Assumption Central A&M Middle School Thursday.

The Sharpshooters edged out to a 6-4 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 13-8 at halftime.

St. Michael didn't let up in the third quarter with an 8-2 run and finished out strong for the 27-13 victory.

Sadie Wiessing led the way for the winners with 12 points while Bella Ordner added eight. Wiessing connected on five field goals and was two of two at the line.

In the tournament, Wiessing finished with a total of 20 points on eight field goals and four of 10 at the line. Ordner talled 15 points on seven field goals and one of two at the line.

The Sharpshooters finished the season with a 21-3 record while Peru Catholic ended the season at 16-4.

Winning the State title was Washington St. Patrick with a 22-6 victory over Kinderhook Western. St. Patrick ended with a 28-0 record while Western was 12-8.
