Sigel St. Michael won the championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

The Sharpshooters edged South Central, 24-22 in the championship contest.

In the third place game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City defeated Effingham Sacred Heart, 33-23.

The consolation championship went to North Clay (Louisville) over St. Elmo/Brownstown, 38-24.

 

At Effingham

Effingham split victories with visiting Mattoon Thursday evening.

Mattoon edged out to a 10-9 lead at halftime in seventh-grade action. Mattoon then went on a 29-15 second half run for the 39-24 victory.

Effingham was led by Cameron Moon with eight points.

The Mustangs claimed the eighth-grade victory, 40-22. Effingham ran out to a 15-2 opening quarter lead and led 25-8 at halftime. Carson Fox got the team off in the right direction, scoring all seven of his points in the opening quarter.

Ian Kinkelaar led the way with 14 points while Jenner Pals chipped in with 11. Kinkelaar hit three trifectas in the contest.

At Olney

Jasper County continued its winning ways by downing Olney in both games Thursday.

Jasper County edged Olney 35-32 in the seventh-grade contest in overtime. Jasper County held a 22-13 halftime lead but Olney came back with a 15-6 second half to knot the score, sending the contest into overtime. Jasper County then had a 7-4 run to pull out a 35-23 victory.

Jacob Ferguson led the way with 11 points while Cambell Ulm and Chase Kistner chipped in with nine each. Benden Emmerich was the top rebounder and Ulm the top defender as the team improved to 9-3.

In the eighth-grade game, Jasper County was a 46-38 winner. Jasper County led 27-14 at halftime and held off Olney in the final quarter.

Chance Mulvey led in scoring with 13 points while Eli Wolf added 11 and Maddox Horner 10. Ian Kessler was the top defender and top rebounder. Jasper County is now 10-2 on the season

Both teams return to action Monday hosting Martinsville.
