Seventh-Grade NTC Tourney, Boys Roundup

SIGEL -- The National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament was held Friday and Saturday at Sigel St. Michael.

In  Friday's action, Stewardson-Strasburg won over Neoga, 48-30 while Dieterich defeated Windsor, 29-14 and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City downed Altamont, 60-20.

In Saturday play, top-seeded Effingham Sacred Heart defeated Stewardson-Strasburg, 30-27.

Sacred Heart held a 6-4 opening quarter lead but Stew-Stras came back to lead 13-12 at halftime. The Shamrocks then had a 12-6 third quarter and held off Stew-Stras in the final period.

Traub led Sacred Heart with 13 points while Karolewicz added eight.

Stew-Stras was led by Vonderheide with 10 points.

South Central edged North Clay, 37-36 in three overtimes, Sigel St. Michael downed Dieterich, 48-27 and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over St. Elmo/Brownstown, 37-26.

The tournament continues today with consolation bracket play. Stew-Stras will meet North Clay at 6 p.m. followed by Dieterich against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 7:15. The winners advance to the consolation championship Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

In winner bracket play Tuesday, Sacred Heart takes on South Central at 6 followed by Sigel St. Michael facing Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7:15 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 8 p.m. while the losers will play for third place at 6:45 p.m.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony's seventh-grade squad handed Olney a 48-14 loss in Saturday action.

The Bullpups ran out to a 22-6 opening quarterl ead as Blake Verdeyen connected on five baskets and a free throw for 12 of his team's points. Charlie Bierman added six points.

Curtis Tingley scored six points in the second period 12-3 tally for a 34-9 halftime lead.

Verdeyen finished with 16 points while Bierman and Tingley tallied eight points each.
