St. Elmo/Brownstown Wins Mulberry Grove Tourney Title

MULBERRY GROVE -- St. Elmo/Brownstown captured the championship of the Mulberry Grove Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

St. Elmo/Brownstown defeated South Central, 42-37 in the title contest. The Cougars held a 13-8 opening quarter lead as Seth Bergmann connected on five points and Max Magnus four. South Central continued to hold the lead, 24-14 at halftime. Callaway Smith hit a three-pointer in the period for the Cougars.

But, here came St. Elmo/Brownstown. The Eagles had a 12-6 third period run to pull within 30-26. Adam Atwood hit two baskets and was four of four at the line for eight points while Collin Maxey tallied four points.

The Eagles continued their run with a 16-7 final quarter to pull out the five-point victory. Atwood continued on his run, scoring six points while Maxey hit two three-pointers and Cade Schaub added a three-pointer.

Atwood finished with 19 to lead the winners while Maxey chipped in with 14.

South Central was led by Bergmann with 11 points. He was held to only one basket in the second half.

The third place contest went to Glen Carbon Father McGivney over Mulberry Grove, 76-39.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was the fifth place winner over Ramsey, 61-50.

CHBC edged out to a 15-12 opening quarter lead as Kaidyn Calame connected on two three-pointers and Caison Evans hit a trifecta. The lead went to 38-20 at halftime. Wyatt Rueff got on track with four baskets that included a three-pointer for nine while Calame added two more three-pointers and Gage Lorton was four of four at the line.

The Bobcats continued their run in the third period 14-10. Lorton added on seven more points and Calame another three-pointer.

Ramsey came back with a 20-9 final quarter but couldn't make up that second period run by CHBC.

Calame led the winners with 16 points while Clayton Wojcik added 12 and Rueff and Lorton tallied 11 each.

In Friday action, St. Elmo/Brownstown reached the championship game with a 63-16 pounding of Mount Olive.

The Eagles sailed out to a 17-1 opening quarter lead and led 44-7 at halftime.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Atwood and Schaub tallied 13 points each while C. Maxey added 10.

South Central then went overtime to beat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 46-40.

The two teams played to a 10-10 opening quarter tie before the Cougars moved into a 12-3 second period as Max Magnus scored seven points. 

CHBC came back with a 13-10 third period to pull within 32-26. Five players contributed in the quarter.

The Bobcats continued on with their comeback, outscoring the Cuogars 10-3 only to fall short.

South Central was led by Markley with 15, Magnus with 13 and Bergmann with 11.

CHBC was led by Lorton with 12.

Father McGivney defeated Lebanon, 52-32 in the final game Friday.

Third place went to Glen Carbon Father McGivney over Mulberry Grove Saturday, 76-39. Lebanon downed Mount Olive 63-40 for seventh place.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were St. Elmo/Brownstown's Adam Atwood, Cade Schaub and Collin Maxey. Atwood was named Most Valuable Player. South Central's Brody Markley and Seth Bergmann, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City's Clayton Wojcik and Gage Lorton, Mublerry Grove's Connor Hartmann and Jackson Icenogle, Father McGivney's Nolan Keller and Ramsey's Gunner Finley.

Cheer champions were St. Elmo/Brownstown and the runners-up were Ramsey.
