TOLEDO -- Newton and North Clay (Louisville) won their first round games at the Cumberland Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Newton won the opener over Vandalia, 72-56. The Eagles stepped out to an 11-4 opening quarter lead as Caden Nichols and Dylan Gier hit two baskets and Parker Wolf nailed a three-pointer.

Vandalia fought back with a 21-17 second quarter run to pull within 28-25 at halftime. Tanner Robbins hit three baskets for six points while five other players scored in the quarter.

Nichols tallied seven points while Wolf chipped in with six.

The Eagles got back on track in the third quarter. Wolf scored seven while Jacob Weber and Gier hit three baskets for six points each. Newton moved ahead 55-39 going into the final period.

Both teams scored 17 in the final quarter.

Newton had four players hit double digits. Wolf led the way with 18 points on six from the field that included three trifectas and three of four at the line. Nichols finished with eight field goals and a free throw for 17. Gier added 12 and Kye Bergbower finished with 10, hitting two three-pointers.

Vandalia was led by Wade Brannon with 20 points, 12 coming in the final quarter.

In the second game, North Clay edged Cumberland, 39-31.

The Cardinals' Cody Zimdars scored four points in the opening quarter as they edged out to a 10-5 lead. Zimdars then went to work, hitting four baskets in the second quarter for eight of the Cardinals 10 points and a 20-11 halftime lead.

North Clay had a 14-10 third period run as Zimdars added five more points and Jesse Weidner hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five.

Cumberland finished out with a 10-5 final period. Grady Jones hit two three-pointers and finished leading the Pirates with nine points, all on three-pointers.

North Clay was led by Zimdars with 17 ponts on eight field goals and one free throw.

The tournament continues Friday with Newton against North Clay at 6 p.m. and Casey-Westfield taking on Marshall at 7:30, both in winner bracket action. Okaw Valley will meet Dieterich at 3 p.m. while Vandalia takes on Cumberland at 4:30 in consolation bracket action. The finals are set for Saturday.

Mulberry Grove Tournament

One local team competed in the Mulberry Grove Tournament Tuesday evening.

South Central handily won over Lebanon, 63-29. The Cougars edged out to a 9-3 opening quarter lead as five players scored.

Brody Markley then went on a tear in the second period as the Cougars ripped out to a 39-21 halftime lead. Markely hit seven baskets that included one three-pointer for 15 of his team's total points. Seth Bergmann added a regular basket and a three-pointer for five.

South Central had an 18-6 third period as Markley added five more points and Max Magnus also had five.

Markley finished with 21 points to lead South Central while Magnus and Bergmann tallied nine each.

In the opening game of the evening, Father McGivney beat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 54-49. No statistics reported.

Mulberry Grove finished out the evening with a 78-64 win over Ramsey.

Tonight's games feature Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Lebanon at 5:15, Mount Olive taking on Ramsey at 6:45 and St. Elmo/Brownstown meeting Mulberry Grove at 8:15.

The tournament continues Friday and finishes out Saturday.

Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a victory in opening round play at the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets downed Shelbyville, 54-49.

Both teams tallied 15 points in the opening period and Shelbyville held a 27-25 halftime lead.

Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a 17-12 third quarter to lead 42-39 going into the final period and kept the momentum going with a 12-10 run.

Three players ended in double figures for the winners. Conner Manhart led the way with 15 points while Jackson Gurgel added 12 and Aiden Sayers 11.

Shelbyville was led by Mason Jones with 15 and Jackson Jokisch and Myles Hammond with nine each.

Warrensburg-Latham beat LeRoy, 47-36 while Tri-Valley was a 48-38 winner over Argenta-Oreana and Champaign St. Thomas More downed University High, 67-28.

The tournament continues tonight. In the high school gym, Heritage takes on Warrensburg-Latham at 6 and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg meets Cerro Gordo Bement at 7:30. In the junior high gym, Unity Christian faces Champaign St. Thomas More at 6 and Argenta-Oreana meets Arthur Christian at 7:30.

The tournament continues Friday and finishes out Saturday.
