S. Central, SEB Win at Mulberry Grove; Dieterich Falls At C'land Tourney; Cerro Gordo Tourney Scores

MULBERRY GROVE -- South Central, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Mulberry Grove claimed victories as the Mulberry Grove Boys Basketball Tournament got underway Monday evening.

South Central opened by beating Father McGivney, 30-27. The Cougars edged out to a 4-3 opening quarter lead as Seth Bergmann tallied two baskets.

The lead stood at 11-7 at halftime. Brody Markley took over the scoring duties for South Central with two regular baskets and a free throw.

Father McGivney came back with an 11-9 third period but still trailed 20-18 going into the final quarter.

South Central then connected on its free throws with six of nine in the final period 

The Cougars were led by Markley and Bergmann with 12 points each.

In the second contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown easily handled Ramsey by a 69-32 tally.

The Eagles stepped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 41-17 at halftime.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Cade Schaub led the way with 19 points on six field goals that included three, three-pointers and four of four at the line. Adam Atwood added 17 behind four field goals, three of those trifectas and six of six at the line and Brody Mason with 10.

Atwood led in rebounds with 10 and had three steals.

The third game went to Mulberry Grove over Mount Olive, 81-44.

The tournament continues tonight as Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meets Father McGivney at 5:15 p.m. followed by South Central taking on Lebanon at 6:45 and Ramsey against Mulberry Grove at 8:15.

At Toledo

The Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament opened with two games Monday evening.

In the opener, Casey-Westfield downed Okaw Valley by a 64-34 tally. The Warriors were led by R. Richards with 28 points and Gilbert with 12.

The second game went to Marshall over Dieterich, 73-57.

The score was knotted at 14-14 after the first quarter. Marshall then moved into a 33-28 halftime lead. Dieterich was within eight going into the final period but Marshall  had a 22-14 final quarter.

Dieterich had three players hit double figures. Lucas Westendorf led the way with 18 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of five at the line. Landen Keck scored 12 and Caleb Gephart picked up 10 points.

Casey-Westfield and Marshall meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the winner bracket.

Dieterich and Okaw Valley square off in consolation bracket play at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Tonight's games feature Newton taknig on Vandalia at 6 p.m. followed by North Clay (Louisville) meeting Cumberland at 7:30.

Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament

No local teams competed in the opening round of the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament Monday evening.

The scores were LeRoy 71, Heritage 38; Cerro Gordo-Bement 57, Shelbyville 53; Unity Christian 43, University High 29 and Tri-Valley 66, Arthur Christian 29.

Tonight's games feature Warrensburg-Latham against LeRoy at 6 p.m. and Tri-Valley taking on Argenta-Oreana at 7:30 in the high school gym.

In the junior high gym, Champaign St. Thomas More faces University HIgh at 6 p.m. and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg meets Shelbyville at 7:30.
