EHS, Newton Winners At Bob Kerans Girls Tourney

NEWTON -- Effingham and Newton were opening round winners at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The Hearts handed Altamont a 67-57 loss in the opening contest. Altamont edged out to a 15-14 first quarter lead but the Hearts came roaring back with a 22-6 second period to lead 36-21 at halftime. Averie Wolfe led the Hearts in that opening quarter with four three-pointers for 12 points.

Altamont's run was led by Grace Nelson with 14 of her team's 15 points.

Altamont regrouped in the third period with a 17-12 lead but couldn't overcome that second quarter run. Both teams scored 19 in the final period.

Wolfe went on a three-point tear, knocking in six of the Hearts 10 total in the contest. Wolfe tallied 23 points as she also hit five of six from the free throw line.

Also in double figures for the Hearts were Alyssa Martin with 15 and Sidney Donaldson with 11.

Altamont was led by Nelson with 39 points on 13 field goals, five from three-point range, and eight of eight free throws. Also in double figures was Claire Boehm with 15.

The two teams connected on a total of 19 three-pointers, 10 for Altamont and nine for Effingham.

In the second contest, Newton tallied a 55-22 win over Flora. The Eagles edged out to a 12-10 opening quarter lead then opened that up to 23-14 at halftime.

Newton continued its scoring binge with a 20-6 third period.

Camryn Martin scored 20 points on eight field goals, two from three-point range, and two of four at the line. Lilly Kessler added 15 and Karasyn Martin 11. Kessler led in rebounds with 11. Camryn Martin had six assists and K. Martin five. K. Martin led in steals with seven while Grace Schumacher had six and C. Martin five.

The tournament continues Wednesday as Effingham faces Flora at 6 p.m. and Newton takes on Altamont at 7:30.

At Neoga

In a regular season contest, Neoga captured a 59-50 victory over Marshall Monday evening.

Marshall held a 19-15 opening quarter lead but Neoga came back with an 18-10 second period to lead 33-29 at halftime.

The Indians continued their run with a 14-4 third period to lead 47-33 going into the final quarter.

Three players hit double figures for Neoga. Brynn Richards led the way with 16 points while Atalie Osborn added 12 and Malory Henderson 11.

Neoga improved to 1-1 on the season and returns to action Friday hosting the Mary Sur Shootout.

Marshall was a 38-17 winner in junior varsity play.
