St. Anthony, Breese Central Capture Turkey Tourney Openers

The Effingham St. Anthony Turkey Tournament opened with a bang Monday evening as the host Bulldogs bounced Rantoul by a 73-43 score and Breese Central won over Champaign Central, 66-41.

The Bulldogs ran out to a 25-8 lead on Rantoul as Ryan Schmidt and Brock Fearday provided the one-two scoring punch with eight points each. The pair hit three baskets and were two of two at the line.

St. Anthony cooled down a little in the second period but still had a 13-12 edge. The Bulldogs shot 51.9 percent from the field in the opening half and were 75 percent from the free throw line.

Schmidt went on a three-point run, nailing three in the third quarter 20-12 run. Max Koenig and Collin Westendorf added two baskets each.

In the final period, St. Anthony tallied 15 more points as Brock Fearday contributed six  and the bench came in to score the rest of the points.

Schmidt led the way for the Bulldogs with 21 points on eight of 12 from the field and two of two at the line. B. Fearday contributed 14 and Koenig added 10.

St. Anthony finished with 51.9 percent from the field and 52.2 percent from the free throw line.

Rantoul mustered only 36.8 percent from the field against the smothering Bulldogs defense and were 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

Although the Bulldogs won, they paid a price. Schmidt was injured in the fourth quarter and Koenig was ejected from the contest.

In the opening contest, Breese Central opened up a 20-10 first quarter lead with a 19-8 second period. Breese had a 21-10 third period.

Leading scorers for the winners were Colten Arnold with 14 and Mason Shubert with 12.

Champaign Central was led by Luke Swanson and Chris Bush with 10 each.

Tonight's games feature Belleville East against Effingham at 5 p.m., Champaign Central taking on Robinson at 6:30 and Mattoon against Breese Central at 8.
