Effingham Sacred Heart split victories with Mattoon St. Johns in boys junior high basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Shamrocks were 33-23 winners in the seventh-grade contest. St. Johns stepped out to a 10-2 opening quarter lead but Sacred Heart came back with a 10-0 second period run to move into a 12-10 first half lead. The Shamrocks then had a 21-13 second half run.

Gabe Traub led Sacred Heart with nine points while Logan Schoenoff added eight.

In the eighth-grade game, St. Johns ran out to a 22-10 opening quarter lead and went on for a 67-35 win.

Owen Schuette led Sacred Heart with 13 points.

At Effingham

At Altamont

Altamont played host to Vandalia and fell in the seventh-grade game Tuesday.

Vandalia ran out to a 28-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Altamont was led by Harrison Potts with 11 points.

The eighth-grade scoresheet was blurred and unreadable.

At Kinmundy

Sigel St. Michael traveled to South Central and picked up two victories Tuesday.

In the seventh-grade encounter, St. Michael stepped out to a 12-2 opening quarter lead and went on for a 35-20 victory.

T. Ballinger scored 12 points for the winners who improved to 4-5 on the season.

South Central was led by A. Strobel with seven points.

In the eighth-grade game, South Central was a 39-27 winners. South Central edged ahead 20-16 at halftime then had a 13-4 third quarter run.

Colton Cartright scored 13 to lead the winners while Brock Sigrist added nine.

South Central was led by Fearday with 11.

At Dieterich

Dieterich held a round robin tournament Tuesday evening.

In the first contest, Newton St. Thomas was a 29-17 winner over host Dieterich.

St. Thomas edged out to a 6-4 opening quarter lead and led 15-6 at halftime. St. Thomas then had an 11-3 third period run.

Earnest led the way for the winners with 14 points while G. Bierman added eight.

Dieterich was led by R. McQueen with 11 points.

Olney St. Joe then defeated Newton St. Thomas, 48-28.

St. Joe held a 28-14 halftime lead then had a 12-6 third period run.

St. Thomas was led by Seaton with 12 points.

The third game went to Olney St. Joe over Dieterich, 31-13.

With an 18-8 opening half, Olney St. Joe dominated and held Dieterich scoreless in the third period with a 10-0 run.

Dieterich was led by W. Goeckner with five points.
