EHS, BSE, CHBC Open Girls H.S. Basketball Season With Victories

ROBINSON -- Effingham High School trailed Robinson by a 9-0 count at the start of the girls basketball contest Monday evening.

The Maroons moved into a 21-13 first quarter lead. 

"We trailed to start the game and got a big lift from  Saige Althoff," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "She kept us afloat in the first half. After the first four minutes, we played really well and beat a really good team."

Several players were on a roll for Robinson as Marisa Zane scored nine opening quarter points and Elizabeth Shea tallied eight

Althoff hit six points in that opening quarter and had 10 at halftime. The Hearts still trailed 30-28 at halftime. Alyssa Martin went on a roll with two baskets and three free throws for seven points in that second period.

The Hearts then got going in the third period with a 13-9 run to lead 41-39. Martin nailed three baskets in the period for 13 points heading into the final quarter.

EHS continued its comeback with a 19-14 final quarter to pull out the seven-point victory, 60-53.

"We showed a lot of poise and played a great second half," said Coach Schafer. "Alyssa had a great game for us and Saige led in rebounds with seven. Bella Austin had five steals."

The Hearts were led in scoring by Martin with 17 points on seven of nine from the field and three of three at the line. Averie Wolfe came through with 13 points as she hit five baskets that included a three-pointer and was two of two at the line. Althoff finished with 11 points on five of five from the field and one of two at the line.

EHS hit 64 percent from the free throw line.and were 66 percent from the field as the Hearts connected on 24 of 36 field goals.

The Hearts also claimed the junior varsity contest, 29-24. Effingham's Tessa Raddatz led the way with 10 points.

At Farina

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City easily handled South Central in both varsity and junior varsity action Monday.

The Bobcats trailed South Central 16-11 after the opening quarter in varsity play but came back strong to take a 71-37 victory.

CHBC led 39-26 at halftime then had a 19-8 third quarter run.

In the second period, Macee Rodman went to work, hitting five field goals, one a three-pointer, and was two of three at the line for 13 of the team's 28 points. Marissa Summers scored seven points.

Two players hit double digits for the winners. Rodman connected on five field goals that included two three-pointers and hit five free throws for 21 points. Summers added 10 points and Ruby Stuckemeyer was just outside double digits with nine.

Karlee Smith led the team in rebounds with eight while Stuckemeyer and Rodman pulled down six each. Rodman had five steals and three assists. Summers also had three assists.

South Central was led by Lauren Johnson with 14 points and Kaitlyn Swift with eight.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC was a 42-12 winner. Madison Dawson led the way in scoring with 11 points.

At Toledo

Brownstown/St. Elmo opened the season with a 38-22 victory over Cumberland Monday evening.

The two teams were tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter. BSE then edged ahead with a 9-2 second period to lead 22-15 at halftime.

BSE then had a 16-7 second half run. Haslett led the way for the winners with 17 points on six field goals and five free throws. Lexi Seabaugh added 13 points. 

Cumberland was led by Katelyn Shoemaker with 11 points and nine rebounds. S. Fritts and A. Dittamore had two assists each.

At Toledo

At Moweaqua

Moweaqua Central A&M stepped out to a 13-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 56-17 win over Neoga Monday evening.

Central A&M held a 30-11 halftime lead.

Burgener led the way for the winners with five field goals and eight free throws for 20 points. Woods added 10 points on five field goals. The team connected on six three-pointers led by Paradee and Burgener with two each.

Neoga was led by Haylee Campbell with eight points.
