Effingham Junior High School played host to Salem in girls seventh- and eighth-grade basketball action and fell twice Thursday.

Salem edged the Mustangs in seventh-grade play, 15-12, taking a 12-6 first half lead.

Effingham was led by Laynee Pankau with five points.

In the eighth-grade contest, Salem led 8-2 after the opening quarter then had a 10-3 second half. for a 22-8 win

The Mustangs were led by Nora Cekander with four points.

At Effingham

Effingham Sacred Heart was a winner in both seventh- and eighth-grade action Thursday.

The seventh-grade contest was a 50-14 win for the Shamrocks. Sacred Heart led 22-2 in the opening quarter. Lynch scored 15 for the winners while Holthaus and Carlson added eight each.

Maddy Manhart led Stew-Stras with eight points and the team dropped to 0-11.

In the eighth-grade game, Sacred Heart ripped out to a 23-2 opening quarter lead and tallied a 52-13 victory.

Three players hit double digits for Sacred Heart. McKinney had 15, Lynch 11 and B. Cox 10.

Stew-Stras was led by Wetherell with five points. The team dropped to 8-3.

At Mattoon

Mattoon tallied two victories over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday.

Mattoon won the seventh-grade game, 30-6. Mattoon held a 15-4 halftime lead.

St Anthony was led by Sylvia Semple who scored all six points.

In the eighth-grade game, Mattoon was a 16-9 winner. Mattoon held a 14-3 halftime lead.

Carly Budde and Sydney Stephens scored four points each for the Shamrocks.

Dieterich and South Central picked up a win each Thursday evening.

Dieterich edged South Central 12-7 in seventh-grade play. Claire Faller and Melanie Niemerg led Dieterich with four points each.

In eighth-grade action, South Central claimed a 21-12 victory. Allison Boerngen led Dieterich with eight points.

At Louisville

North Clay defeated Sandoval in both seventh- and eighth-grade play Thursday.

North Clay won the seventh-grade contest, 24-6 and then captured the eighth-grade game, 48-8.

North Clay is back in action today against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.
