ALTAMONT -- Effingham St. Anthony's season came to a close with a narrow 48-45 loss to Tuscola Tuesday in the Class 1A Altamont Boys Basketball Sectional.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 12-9 opening quarter lead on Tuscola. Collin Westendorf hit a basket and two free throws while four other players scored a basket apiece as the Bulldogs moved ahead.

St. Anthony still held the momentum in the second quarter despite Tuscola taking a 9-8 scoring edge. Westendorf scored six of the Bulldogs' eight points and St. Anthony led 20-18 at halftime.

Then here came the Warriors. Tuscola went on a 15-10 third quarter run to pull ahead 33-30. Kam Sweetnam connected on two three-pointers and Jordan Quinn had a basket and two free throws.

Then it was a battle deluxe in the final quarter. The two teams played to a 15-15 tie and a long shot at the buzzer didn't connect to tie the game for the Bulldogs as they fell.

Neither team shot well from the field as St. Anthony hit 37.5 percent while Tuscola was 36.3 percent. But both teams did well at the free throw line. St. Anthony was 63.6 percent and the Warriors 75 percent.

The Bulldogs did hold a 35-26 edge on the baoads as Griffen Sehy pulled down eight and Brock Fearday had five.

St. Anthony finished the season with a 22-13 record while Tuscola advanced with a 28-6 mark.

Tuscola will now meet Altamont at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday. The winner of the Altamont Sectional will meet the winner of the Junction Gallatin County Sectional, either Webber Township (Bluford) or Mounds Meridian. Those two teams also play Friday for a sectional championship.
