EHS Boys Season Ends With Loss To Marion

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School saw its boys basketball season come to a close with a 69-61 loss to Marion in the Class 3A Mount Vernon Regional Saturday.

The Hearts took the opening quarter lead by a 12-9 count as Garrett Wolfe connected for a three-pointer and two free throws for five and Logan Heil had a basket and three free throws, also for five points.

Marion came back with a 19-17 second period run but the Hearts still had a 29-28 halftime lead. Andrew Splechter kept EHS in the contest with 13 of the team's 17 points in the quarter. He hit five baskets and was three of three at the line.

But Marion came back after halftime with a 21-13 third quarter to move into a 49-42 lead. 

Effingham had a good final period but still fell short by a point and couldn't stop Evan Noelle.

Noelle scored 15 points in the opening half then had an eight-point third quarter and finished with five baskets and six of seven at the line for 16 in the final quarter for a grand total of 39 points.

Also in double figures for the winners was Mitchell Jackson with 14.

The Hearts countered with Splechter who hit 12 baskets, one a three-pointer, and was five of six at the line for 30 points. Wolfe connected on seven baskets, four from three-point range, and was four of six at the line for 22 points.
