Neoga Wins Regional Title, EHS Season Ends

NEOGA -- Neoga High School took the early lead and never looked back in a 60-36 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City to win its own Class 1A Girls Basketball Regional Friday evening.

The Indians held a 37-14 halftime lead.

It was even scoring for the Indians as four players finished in double figures for Neoga. Brynn Richards, Allison Sampson, Sydney Hakman and Sydney Richards all scored 12 points each. Hakman connected on three trifectas while Sampson and S. Richards hit two each.

Neoga improves to an outstanding 30-6 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday in the Casey-Westfield Sectional. The Indians will meet Hume Shiloh at 6 p.m. Hume Shiloh won the Arcola Regional by beating the host squad, 47-39.

CHBC was led by Gracie Heckert with nine points on three field goals, two from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Ruby Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with 11. Carmen Olesen had two steals. Gracie Heckert led in assists with six.

CHBC ended the season with a 21-11 record.

Class 3A Mattoon Regional

Effingham saw it's fine season come to a close at the Mattoon Regional in a game where the Hearts fell to the host Green Wave, 56-54.

EHS had beaten Mattoon twice during the regular season, one time by four points and another time by five points.

The Green Wave took the opening quarter lead 15-10 but the Hearts came back within a point at halftime, 25-24. EHS took a 20-18 lead in the second period but the Green Wave came back to lead by one going into the second half.

EHS couldn't quite get going. The Green Wave had an 18-14 third period run to lead 43-38 going into the final quarter.

The Hearts came back with a 16-13 final period run but still fell short behind too many turnovers.

Madison Mapes and Alyssa Martin led EHS with 11 points each.

The Hearts finished the season with a 20-11 record while Mattoon evened its record to 16-16.

The Green Wave head to the Centralia Sectional and will face Highland, a 52-49 winner over Waterloo to win its own regional. The two teams meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday. In the second game, Mount Vernon will take on East St. Louis Senior at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m.
