Neoga, CHBC, North Clay Advance In Girls Regionals

Neoga and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A Neoga Girls Basketball Regional after both teams captured victories Tuesday evening.

Neoga ran off to a 20-6 opening quarter lead on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg,as Sydney Richards was hot from the field, knocking in four baskets and a free throw for nine of her team's points. Allison Sampson connected on a regular basket and a three-pointer in the quarter.

Windsor/Stew-Stras could manage only two baskets and two free throws in the quarter.

The Hatchets then played closer in the second period, just trailing by a 15-13 count but behind 35-19 at halftime. WSS connected on its free throws with six of eight with Katelyn VonBehrens hitting three of four.

The two teams played to a 20-20 third quarter before Neoga had an 11-9 final period for the winning margin.

S. Richards finished with 22 points on nine field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Also in double figures was Sampson with 17.

Neoga hit 26 field goals, seven of those three-pointers and seven of 11 at the line. Sampson connected on four three-pointers.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ellie Wittenberg with 18 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers, and six of seven at the line. Ella Kinkelaar tallied 12.

The Hatchets connected on 14 field goals and were 15 of 19 at the line.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Cumberland met in the second game of the evening with the Bobcats coming out a 53-44 winner.

Cumberland took a 13-10 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with a 14-7 second period to lead 24-21 at halftime.

The Pirates challenged again in the third quarter with a 13-10 run to pull within 34-33 going into the final period.

But CHBC put on a 19-11 surge for the nine-point win.

Two players hit double digits for the Bobcats. Mady Wojcik led the way with 14 points on five field goals and four of five at the line while Ruby Stuckemeyer chipped in with 10. CHBC connected on 10 of 13 free throws. 

Wojcik also led in rebounds with nine and had three steals along with Gracie Heckert. Heckert led in assists with nine. CHBC sports a 12-10 record.

Cumberland was led by Paige Dittamore with 17 points on six field goals and five of eight at the line. Hannah Shoemaker tallied 12.

Neoga is now 29-3 on the season and will square off against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship. The Indians finished seventh in the final Class 1A State Basketball poll.

Class 1A North Clay Regional

No. 5 seeded North Clay (Louisville) upset No. 3 Brownstown/St. Elmo in the Class 1A North Clay Regional Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals won 45-31 and improve to 20-10 on the season.

North Clay advances to the championship game Thursday to face second-seeded Effingham St. Anthony at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs finished No. 6 in the final Class 1A Girls State Basketball poll.
