LOUISVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A North Clay Regional with a victory Monday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 16-9 opening quarter lead but South Central fought back in the second period to pull within 27-21 at halftime.

Stacie Vonderheide got St. Anthony off in the right direction with eight points while Lucy Fearday chipped in with five and Nancy Ruholl nailed a three-pointer.

Brooklyn Garrett and Taegan Webster scored four points each in the second quarter for the Cougars

St. Anthony then decided to put the game away with a 24-6 third quarter run. Fearday nailed five baskets for 10 points in the quarter while Vonderheide scored eight points.

Vonderheide finished with 12 field goals for 24 points to lead the Buklldogs while Fearday connected on eight field goals and five of eight from the free throw line for 21 points.

Leading the Cougars was Garrett with five field goals and two of 10 at the line for 12 points.

St. Anthony advances to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will face either Brownstown/St. Elmo or North Clay. Those two teams play today at 7 p.m.

Class 3A Mattoon Regional

Effingham easily handled its opening round opponent at the Mattoon Regional Monday evening.

The Hearts trounced Charleston, 87-15. EHS stepped out to a 19-5 opening quarter lead as Ella Niebrugge connected on a three-pointer and a regular basket for five while Madison Mapes and Averie Wolf also hit a three-pointer each.

EHS held the Trojans scoreless in the second period for a 46-5 halftime lead.

The Hearts passed the scoring around as 13 players tallied in the game. Four hit double figures led by Bria Beals and Alyssa Martin with 11 points each and Mapes and Niebrugge with 10 points each.

EHS connected on 10 three-pointers led by Mapes and Niebrugge with two each. Six other players tallied a three-pointer.

In the second game, Mattoon downed Olney Richland County, 63-38.

EHS, reached the 20-win plateau with the victory and is 20-10 on the season. The Hearts will now face Mattoon at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

Class 2A Carmi White County Regional

Teutopolis moved into the championship game with a 48-34 win over Carmi-White County Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes didn't let any grass grow under their feet by tearing out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead. Kaylee Niebrugge was the catalyst with four field goals and one of two at the line for nine points.

T-town kept the pressure on with a 12-7 second period to lead 25-10 at halftime. Molly Ruholl connected on a regular basket and a three-pointer.

Carmi-White County came back with a slight 13-11 third quarter and had an 11-10 final period but it was too little, too late.

Niebrugge was the lone Wooden Shoe player in double figures with 14 on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and one of two at the line. She also led in rebounds with six. Summer Wall chipped in with eight points.

In the second contest, Mount Carmel downed Fairfield, 44-36.

T-town will now face Mount Carmel at 7 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship.

Class 2A Flora Regional

Newton and Robinson came out winners in the Flora Regional Monday.

Newton edged Vandalia, 50-46. The Eagles took a 12-11 opening quarter lead and then had a 15-6 second period to lead 27-17 at halftime.

The Eagles maintained control in the third quarter with a slight 11-10 edge but Vandalia came roaring back in the final period with a 19-12 run only to fall short. The Vandals finished with five three-pointers in the contest.

Camryn Martin led the way for Newton with four field goals and nine of 11 at the line for 17 points. Also in double figures was Lilly Kessler with 11 points and she led in rebounds, also with 11.

Emma Nadler and Karasyn Martin led in steals with three each. C. Martin and Elley Bennett had three assists each.

In the first game of the evening, Robinson won over Salem, 51-40.

Newton is now 16-15 on the season and will square off against Robinson Thursday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship.
