St. A To Play For Title in 8-2A, S. Heart In Third Place Game In 8-1A

KANKAKEE -- Effingham St. Anthony won two games at the Class 8-2A Boys State Basketball Tournament at Kankakee Bishop McNamara High School to advance to the championship game Thursday.

In the opener, St. Anthony won over Champaign St. Matthew 45-35. The Bullpups edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead then ripped the game open with an 18-6 second quarter to lead 27-13 at halftime.

Miles Waldhoff scored 17 points for the winners, hitting five field goals, three from trifecta land, and was four of four at the line. Also in double figures was Graiden Wilhour with 12. Will Bierman and Gabe Looman scored eight points each.

In other opening round games, Mount Sterling Brown County defeated Dwight, 51-20; Decatur Robertson won over Hardin Calhoun, 38-22 and Kankakee Bishop McNamara defeated Bartonville Monroe, 45-37.

St. Anthony advanced to meet Kankakee Bishop McNamara and won 49-41.

Kankakee took a 9-7 opening quarter lead and led 19-9 at halftime.

But the Bullpups mounted a big-time comeback, outscoring McNamara, 21-9 to lead 30-29 going into the final period then carried that over with a 19-13 fourth quarter.

Waldhoff again led the way with 25 points on four field goals, three from three-point range, and 14 of 16 at the line.

Decatur Robertson defeated Mount Sterling Brown County, 42-37 and will now meet the Bullpps at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship. Robertson is 15-0 while St. Anthony is 19-9.

Mount Sterling Brown County (27-2) and Kankakee Bishop McNamara (25-3) will square off for third Thursday at 6 p.m.

Class 8-1A State Tournament

Effingham Sacred Heart competed in the Class 8-1A State Touranment at Assumption Central A&M Middle School and will be playing for third place.

The Shamrocks won their opener, 41-39 over  Mattoon St. John's with an exciting ending.

Sacred Heart edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead but St. John's came back with a 16-6 second period to lead 23-14 at halftime.

Sacred Heart rallied with a 15-8 third period to pull within 31-29 going into the final quarter. The score was tied at 39-39 with only a few seconds remaining before the contest would go into overtime. But Freddie Jansen made an incredible shot while falling down back over his shoulder and that was the game winner, 41-39.

Three players hit double figures for the Shamrocks. William Hecht led the way with 14 points while Jude Traub added 13 and Jansen 11.

In other first ruond games, Springfield Christ the King won over Peoria Heights St. Thomas, 51-23; Peru Catholic downed Royal Prairieview Ogden, 28-22 and Bloomington Cornerstone downed Odell, 51-36.

Sacred Heart then fell to Springfield Christ the King, 65-39. Christ the King took off to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and finished with a 21-8 final period.

Sacred Heart could never get untracked. Jacob Warner ledthe Shamrocks with 17 points while Hecht added 12.

In the other semifinal contest, Bloomimgton Cornerstone defeated Peru Catholic, 49-46.

Sacred Heart and Peru Catholic will square off for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday while Springfield Christ the King will meet Bloomington Cornerstone at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.

Class 8-3A State Tournament

Teutopolis competed in the 8-3A State Tourament at Tolono Unity High School and fell in opening round play Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes faced East St. Louis Lincoln and lost by one point, 37-36.

T-town ripped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 26-14 at halftime.

East St. Louis started a comeback with an 11-8 third period to pull within 34-25 and then had a 12-2 final period for the one-point win.

Kendal Mette led the Shoes with 17 points while Jake Kocher added 14.

In other first round games, Dolton Lincoln downed Chillicothe, 51-30; Glenwood Brookwood won over Monticello, 56-38 and Metamore defeated Riverton, 63-52.

in the semifinals, East St. Louis Lincoln won over Dolton Lincoln, 55-47 and Glenwood Brookwood downed Metamora, 63-50.

East St. Louis Lincoln and Glenwood Brookwood meet for the championship Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Dolton Lincoln and Metamora ssquare off at 6 for third place.

T-town ends the season with a 25-4 record.
