LOUISVILLE -- South Central and North Clay (Louisville) were opening round winners in the Class 1A North Clay Girls Basketball Regional Saturday.

South Central opened with a 54-44 win over Dieterich.

The Cougars edged out to an 11-5 opening quarter lead and led 25-17 at halftime.

Brooklyn Garrett scored five points in the opening quarter and Taegan Webster led the way in the second period with 10 points.

The Cougars had a 29-27 edge in the second half. Webster continued on with two baskets in the third quarter as Kaitlyn Swift connected on three trifectas for nine points.

Webster hit seven of 10 from the line in the final period to finish with 23 points on seven field goals and nine free throws. Swift also finished in double figures with 14.

In the second contest, North Clay beat Altamont, 55-44.

North Clay opened up a 21-11 first quarter lead. Maria Price hit three baskets and was three of four at the line for nine points while Alexis VanDyke connected on two three-pointers for six.

Altamont came back with a10-9 second quarter edge to pull within 30-21 at halftime. But North Clay took a 12-10 third period before the two teams played even in the final quarter.

The Cardinals had four players hit double figures. Price and Miah Ballard scored 14 each while VanDyke added 13 and Allison Czyzewski 12. Price connected on five field goals and was four of seven at the line while Ballard hit one three-pointer and was 11 of 21 at the line.

Altamont was led by Skylie Klein with 11 points. Klein connected on four field goals which included two three-pointers and was one of one at the line. VanDyke hit four three-pointers in the game.

The regional continues tonight as No. 2 Effingham St. Anthony takes on South Central at 7 p.m.

North Clay advances to face Brownstown/St. Elmo at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

The winners of Tuesday evening's games advance to the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 1A Neoga Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Cumberland all captured victories Saturday in the Neoga Regional.

Windsor/Stew-Stras opened with a 43-32 victory over Casey-Westfield.

The Hatchets edged out to an 8-3 opening quarter lead and led 21-15 at halftime. Casey-Westfield came back with an 11-9 third period but the Hatchets finished strong with a 13-6 final quarter.

Ella Kinkelaar and Samantha Hayes led the way for Windsor/Stew-Stras with 14 points each. Kinkelaar hit six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was three of four at the line while Hayes connected on three field goals and was eight of 10 at the line.

In the second game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City trounced Martinsville, 71-21.

CHBC ripped out to a 32-1 opening quarter lead and led 47-8 at halftime.

Four players connected in double figures for the Bobcats. Gracie Heckert led the way with 19 points on seven field goals that included three trifectas and was two of two at the line. Macee Rodman added 14 points while Aja Gour chipped in with 13 and Mady Wojcik added 11.

Marissa Summers led in rebounds with nine and Wojcik added seven. Wojcik led in steals with six. Heckert had seven assists.

CHBC improved to 20-10.

In the third game of the day, Cumberland won over Ramsey, 59-29.

The Pirates took control in the opening quarter with a 19-4 run and never looked back.

Abbie Becker tallied 21 points on seven field goals, all three-pointers. Katelyn Shoemaker chipped in with 10 points.

The Pirates hit 12 three-pointers in the contest led by Becker and Suzy Fritts with three each. Fritts finished with nine points.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg will meet top-seeded Neoga Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by CHBC taking on Cumberland at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m. That contest was originally scheduled for Friday.

Class 2A Flora Regional

Newton came out a winner as the only local team entered in the Flora Regional Saturday.

In the opener, Salem edged Marshall, 46-42.

Newton then tallied a 45-41 victory over Flora.

Newton advances to face Vandalia tonight at 7:30 while Salem meets Robinson at 6. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m.

 

Class 2A Carmi-White County Regional

Carmi-White County and Mount Carmel picked up victories in opening round play at this regional Saturday.

Carmi-White County downed Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 47-18.

Mount Carmel then won over Lawrenceville, 51-27.

In tonight's games, top-seeded Teutopolis will face Carmi-White County at 6 followed by Fairfield taking on Mount Carmel at 7:30.

The winners then advance to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m.

 

Class 3A Mattoon Regional

Effingham, seeded second, will face No. 9 Charleston at 6 p.m. today in the Mattoon Regional.

The second contest is No. 3 Mattoon against No. 5 Olney.

The winners advance to the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.
