Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Regionals -- Feb. 1

Effingham Sacred Heart captured a boys regional basketball championship Wednesday evening.

 

The Shamrocks defeated Pana Sacred Heart, 44-32 to win the Class 8-1A Decatur Lutheran Regional.

Sacred Heart (15-6) advances to the Pana Sacred Heart Sectional Monday to face either Godfrey St. Ambrose or Carrollton St. John. Those two teams meet tonight for the championship of the Carrollton St. Johns Regonal. The sectional contest Monday will begin at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 8-2A Stewardson-Strasburg Regional

Assumpton Central A&M downed Nokomis, 24-21 for the regional title at Stewardson-Strasburg.

Assumption Central A&M advances to the Effingham St. Anthony Sectional Monday and will meet either St. Anthony or Casey-Westfield at 6:30 p.m. Those two teams play tonight for the St. Anthony Regional championship at 5:30 p.m.

 

Class 8-3A Cumberland Regional

Cumberland moved into the championship game of its own regional with a victory Wednesday evening.

Cumberland defeated Jasper County, 37-28 in the opening game.

Cumberland edged out to a 15-12 opening quarter lead and led 25-18 at halftime.

Venetta led Cumberland with 18 points while Roedl added 11.

Jasper County was led by Hayden Mulvey with nine points. Jasper County finishes the season with an 8-16 record.

In the second contest, Lawrenceville Parkview downed Robinson Nuttall, 40-34.

Cumberland and Lawrenceville Parkview will play for the regional championship today at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the Paris Mayo Sectional Monday at 6:30 p.m. against either Teutopolis or Macon Meridian. Those two teams play tonight at 6 p.m. for the championship of the Teutopolis Regional.

Class 8-3A Cumberland Regional

Class 8-4A Mount Zion Regional

Rochester handed Mount Zion a 35-14 loss in the opening contest Wednesday evening.

In the second game, Mattoon edged Charleston, 38-35.

Mattoon and Rochester will now meet for the regional championship tonight at 6. The winner advances to the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional Monday.

 

Class 8-1A Hutsonville Regional

Newton St. Thomas and Mattoon St. John squared off for the title of the Hutsonsville Regional Wednesday evening.

Mattoon St. John was the winner, 48-30 and will advance to the Hume Shiloh Sectional Monday at 6:30 p.m.
