Mt. Zion Beats T-town; Newton Advances To LIC Tourney Title, C'land To Play For Third At LPC Tourney

TEUTOPOLIS -- Mount Zion trailed Teutopolis after the opening quarter but came back to lead at half and went on for a 68-61 boys basketball win over the Wooden Shoes Tuesday.

The Shoes led 18-14 after the opening quarter but Mount Zion took a 29-25 halftime lead. The Braves then had a 19-13 third period and held off a final quarter challenge.

Four players hit double figures for the Braves. Lyncoln Koester led the way with 20 points while Sammy Driscoll added 13 and Brayden Trimble and Carson Cuddy tallied 11 each. Mount Zion connected on 10 three-pointers in the game led by Driscoll with four and Cuddy with three. The Braves were only 14 of 25 from the free throw line.

Teutopolis was also led by four players in double figures. Brendan Niebrugge led with 18 points on six three-pointers. Garrett Gaddis added 12 while Caleb Siemer scored 11 and James Niebrugge 10. The Shoes hit nine three-pointers led by B. Niebrugge with six. T-town was 10 of 14 at the line.

The Wooden Shoes dropped to 16-5 on the season.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton advanced to the championship game of the Little Illini Conference Tournament with a victory Tuesday evening.

The Eagles ripped out to an 18-9 opening quarter lead on Casey-Westfield but the Warriors came back with a 16-4 second period to lead 25-22 at halftime. Newton then had a 15-14 third quarter edge to pull within 39-37 going into the final period.

Newton then went on a 22-13 run for the victory. Caden Nichols and Parker Wolf were the scoring leaders. Nichols hit seven field goals, three of those from three-point range, and four of four at the line for 21 while Wolf connected on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of eight at the line for 20.

The Eagles improved to 15-7 on the season and will now face Richland County at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the championship. Richland County edged Lawrenceville 55-53 to advance.

Lawrenceville and Casey-Westfield will play for third place at 6 p.m. Friday.

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament

Cumberland High School will be playing for third place at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament.

The Pirates fell to Decatur LSA, 60-39 to drop into the third place contest.

LSA ran out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead on the Pirates and never looked back.

Cumberland had two players in double figures. Maddox McElravy and Gavin Hendrix tallied 13 points each. McElravy hit four field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of four at the line while Hendrix knocked in four field goals, two from three-point range, and was three of six at the line.

In other games, Villa Grove beat Heritage, 65-55; Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond won over Tri-County, 69-48; Okaw Valley downed Cerro Gordo/Bement, 52-41 and no score was reported on the Blue Ridge vs. Argenta-Oreana contest.

Decatur LSA will meet Okaw Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday for the championship. Cumberland takes on Cerro Gordo at 5:30 for third place.

Games Friday will determine the consolation bracket contests.
