Altamont, Dieterich, N. Clay, St. Anthony Advance In NTC Boys Tourney

ALTAMONT -- Four games were contested at the 87th National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Altamont captured the opening contest with a 67-55 count over Neoga. Altamont stepped out to a 21-10 opening quarter lead.

Kaidyn Miller put in six points for the Indians in the first quarter. 

Neoga then mounted a run with a 14-10 second period to pull within 31-24 at halftime. Quintin Richards put in eight points while Brady Reynolds added seven.

Altamont went on a 20-17 third quarter run as Eric Kollmann put in four baskets for eight points and Eli Miller tallied five. 

Neoga's Reynolds kept rolling with three trifectas in the third quarter along with a regular basket and a free throw for 12 of his team's 17 points.

Altamont continued with its scoring edge in the final quarter with a 16-14 run to finish with the 12-point victory.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Kollmann ended with 18 points on nine field goals while Avery Jahraus added 13 and Miller 10. Av. Jahraus led in rebounds with six.

Neoga was led by Reynolds with 25 points on 10 field goals, four from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Richards chipped in with 19 points and five rebounds

Dieterich picked up a 60-46 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in the second contest.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to an 18-15 opening quarter lead as Jaxon Funneman and Caleb Gephart provided that one-two scoring punch with eight points each. Austin Wittenberg led WSS with five.

Dieterich continued to move forward with a 13-11 second period to lead 31-26 at halftime. 

The Hatchets came back with a 14-12 third quarter as Jordan Wittenberg tallied six points. Westendorf kept the Maroons close with 10 of his team's 12 points.

Dieterich then put the game on ice with a 17-6 final period run. Gephart scored eight points in the quarter.

Gephart finished with 22 poitns on 10 field goals and two of two at the line. Westendorf added 18 and Funneman finished with 13 for the winners. Westendorf led in rebounds with nine while Gephart added five and had three assists.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by A. Wittenberg with 16 points and J. Wittenberg with 14. A. Wittenberg pulled down five rebounds and had two assists.

In the third game of the evening, North Clay edged South Centrall 57-53.

The Cougars took a 15-13 opening quarter lead as Aidan Dodson put in seven points on two free throws and two baskets. 

South Central took that lead to 33-23 at halftime. Dodson continued on his scoring run with four baskets and five of five at the line for 14 of his team's 18 points in the quarter.

But the Cardinals weren't out of it yet. North Clay came back with a 15-11 third period run on five points each by Alex Boose and Cody Zimdars. North Clay pulled within 44-38 going into the final period.

Then the Cardinals really got on a roll. Levi Smith, who had six points through the first three quarters, knocked in three baskets and a free throw while Boose continued with three baskets that included one three-pointer and both players scored seven each. North Clay had a 19-9 run to pull out the win.

The Cardinals were led by Boose with 20 points on eight of 16 field goals and one of two at the line. Zimdars and Smith scored 12 points each. Logan Fleener led in rebounds with six.

South Central was led by Dodson with a whopping 31 points on 10 of 18 from the field and a perfect seven of seven at the line. He also led the team in rebounds with seven. Anthony Buonaura added 10 points and six rebounds.

In the final contest of the evening, Effingham St. Anthony held off a final quarter challenge by St. Elmo/Brownstown for a 51-45 victory.

SEB edged ahead 10-9 in the opening quarter as Adam Atwood scored five points. But the Bulldogs came back with an 11-7 second period to move ahead by three at halftime. Ryan Schmidt scored four points.

St. Anthony seemed to open the game up with an 18-11 third period run to lead by 10 going into the final quarter. Schmidt again led the way with five points while Collin Westendorf and Brock Fearday put in two baskets each.

St. Elmo/Brownstown then came roaring back with a 17-13 final period only to fall short. Cade Schaub connected on two three-pointers and was two of three at the line for eight in the quarter.

Westendorf finished with 15 points to lead the Bulldogs while Schmidt added 11. St. Anthony connected on 16 of 25 free throws and had only one three-pointer by Westendorf. Westendorf pulled down seven rebounds while Fearday had six and Max Koenig five. Fearday led in assists with three.

SEB had three players hit double figures. Atwood connected on six field goals and five of five at the line for 17 while Schaub added 11 and Campbell 10. The Eagles were 11 of 17 from the free throw line and finished with six three-pointers led by Campbell with three. Atwood led in rebounds with seven. Schaub had three steals.

Since four games were contested Tuesday evening, there will be no games tonight. The tournament resumes Thursday with Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City taking on South Central at 5  p.m. followed by Neoga meeting Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 6:15 p.m., both in consolation bracket play. The final game will feature Altamont meeting Dieterich at 8 p.m. in winner bracket action.
