Hearts Win, Lose At Salem, Newton Advances In LIC, C'land In LPC

SALEM -- Effingham High School edged host Salem, 48-47 in consolation play to advance to the consy championship at the 71st Salem Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Hearts ripped out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead on the Wildcats behind Logan Heil's six points, five by Garrett Wolfe and a three-pointer by Andrew Donaldson.

Salem had a 12-11 second period but the Hearts still led 26-16 at halftime.

EHS continued with a 12-11 third period but Salem came roaring back to tie the score in the final quarter before the Hearts pulled out the 48-47 victory. Andrew Splechter connected on four free throws while Wolfe hit two of two and Heil hit two regular baskets.

Heil finished with 18 and Wolfe 11 for the Hearts.

That sent EHS into the consolation championship game against Champaign Central.

The Hearts took a 16-12 opening quarter lead behind Wolfe's 11 points and five by Heil.

EHS then went on a 20-6 tear to lead 36-18 at halftime. Wolfe continued his hot scoring by hitting two three-pointers and two of two at the line for eight and tallied 19 at halftime.

The Hearts played Central even in the third quarter to hold a 46-28 lead.

Then, the game fell apart. Central went on an 18 point run while the Hearts couldn't find the range, missing six field goals and a free throw. EHS didn't score a point in the final period and Central tied the score at 46-46 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Central connected on two baskets and nine free throws.and outscored the Hearts 13-9 for the 59-55 victory.

EHS was led by Wolfe with 27 points on eight field goals, three of those three-pointers, and eight of eight at the line. Donaldson tallied 10.

In other games, East St. Louis beat Mount Vernon, 49-44 for the championship. Third place went to Thornton Fractionl North 46-44 over Carbondale. Salem defeated Madison, 53-49 for seventh place.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton advanced with a victory in the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles edged Mount Carmel, 57-55 in overtime.

Newton held an 18-16 opening quarter lead before the Golden Aces went on a 20-9 second period to lead 36-27 at halftime.

Newton then had a 24-14 second half run to knot the score at 51-51, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Newton had a 6-4 run for the win.

Caden Nichols was the lone double figure performer for the Eagles with 24 points on nine field goals, that included four three-pointers, and two of two at the line. Dylan Gier tallied eight points.

In the other games, Richland County beat Marshall, 63-31; Lawrenceville won over Robinson, 58-36 and Casey-Westfield beat Paris, 48-35.

The tournament continues tonight as Marshall faces Robinson at 6 p.m. and Paris takes on Mount Carmel at 7:30 in consolation bracket play. Newton will play Tuesday evening against Casey-Westfield at 7:30 while Richland County meets Lawrenceville at 6, Both games are in winner bracket play.

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament

Cumberland picked up a first round game in the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates defeated Arcola, 47-42. Cumberland took a 12-7 opening quarter lead as Maddox McElravy scored six points and Bryant Weber and Trevin Magee connected on a three-pointer each.

Arcola came back with a 14-4 second quarter run to lead 21-16 at halftime.

But the Pirates weren't out of the game. Magee and Hendrix scored seven points each in the third quarter as Cumberland moved ahead 36-38. 

Arcola made a final quarter run but Hendrix scored seven points and the Pirates held them off for the six-point victory.

Hendrix finished with 14 points while McElravy added 13.

In other games Saturday, Decatur LSA beat Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, 69-43; Cerro Gordo downed Villa Grove, 50-42; and Okaw Valley won over Argenta-Oreana, 73-70.

The tournament continues Tuesday with Cumberland facing Decatur LSA at 6 p.m. and Cerro Gordo taking on Okaw Valley at 7:30 in the high school gym. In the junior high gym in consolation bracket play, Heritage faces Villa Grove at 5 p.m., Blue Ridge goes against Argenta-Oreana at 6:30 and Tri-County faces ALAH at 8 p.m.
