Stewardson-Strasburg and South Central advanced to the championship game of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament with victories Tuesday evening.
Stew-Stras edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 42-41. Stew-Stras took a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 21-18 at halftime.
Stew-Stras held a 35-29 lead going into the final quarter when CHBC came roaring back with a 12-7 run only to fall a point short.
CHBC's Howell knocked in two field goals and three of four from the free throw line for seven points in that run while C. Dilley hit a three-pointer and two free throws.
But Gurgel hit a three-pointer for Stew-Stras while Bible put in a basket and W. Vonderheide two free throws for the win.
Bible finished with 11 points to lead Stew-Stras while W. Vonderheide added 10 and Morris nine.
CHBC was led by Howell with 15 and C. Dilley with 14.
In the second contest, South Central claimed a 40-36 win over Sigel St. Michael in overtime.
St. Michael held an 11-6 opening quarter lead and led 16-11 at halftime. South Central came back with an 11-8 third quarter to pull within 24-22 going into the final period. South Central then had a 10-8 fourth quarter to knot the score at 32-32 sending the game into the overtime period.
In overtime, South Central's Sebastian Kruger scored four points, Luke Shumate a basket and Cartright two free throws for the win.
South Central was led by Kruger with 17 points and L. Shumate with 11.
St. Michael was led by Bryce Niebrugge with 15 and A. Mayer with 10.
Stew-Stras will meet South Central at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Sigel St. Michael square off for third place at 6:15.
The consolation championship between North Clay and Dieterich will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday.

At Greenville
Effingham advanced to the consolation championship after downing HIllsboro 40-32 Thursday in the 74th Annual James Burke Memorial Basketball Tournament.
The Mustangs edged out to a 3-2 opening quarter lead and then opened up the lead to 18-9 at halftime.
Hillsboro came back with a 17-13 third quarter and Effingham led 31-26 going into the final period where the Mustangs had a 9-6 run.
Carter Braddy scored 15 for the Mustangs.
Greenville defeated Aviston, 32-19.
Effingham will now meet Greenville for the consolation championship Friday at 5 p.m.
Tonight's games will feature St. Anthony against Staunton at 6 and Salem facing Triad at 7. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m. while the losers will play for third place at 6.

At Paris
Jasper County split victories with Paris Mayo Thursday.
Jasper County captured the seventh-grade contest, 37-21 to improve to 18-2 on the season.
The winners held a 24-4 halftime lead.
Chance Mulvey scored nine and Ian Kessler eight for the winners. Top rebounder was Kessler and top defender was Mulvey.
In the eighth-grade game, Paris Mayo tallied a 32-26 win. Jasper County held a 17-12 halftime lead but Mayo came back with a 20-16 second half for the win.
Hayden Mulvey was the lone player in double figures for Jasper County with 11.

At Teutopolis
Teutopolis and Newton St. Thomas picked up a victory each during action Tuesday.
St. Thomas edged the Wooden Shoes, 29-28 in seventh-grade B play. St. Thomas held a 20-11 halftime lead then held off a final quarter challenge by T-town. The Shoes had a 13-3 run.
Bennet and Barthlemy scored six points each for St. Thomas.
T-town was led by Grant Probst with six points.
In the eighth-grade B action, T-town ran off to a 14-3 opening quarter lead, led 27-11 at halftime and claimed a 41-20 victory.
The Shoes were led by Caleb Deters with nine points.
Meinhart led St. Thomas with seven points.

Norht Clay's fifth/sixth grade boys team both lost to Flora Tuesday.
Flora won the fifth-grade contest, 35-6.
In sixth-grade play, Flora was a 31-26 winner.
